@pjacock that's some great progress!
@gedankenstuecke This ~40% tenting angle on the #MechanicalKeyboard prototype does feel reasonably comfy, the different keycaps too. My speed has taken a slight hit (expected), but the accuracy... 😭
[Some of this is that it is currently running as two separate half keyboards, and I do notice keys can arrive out of order. Hoping the missing components arrive soon to eliminate that factor]
Pushing my soldering skills with #MechanicalKeyboard design. The surface mounted 5-way navigation buttons were easier than I feared, but the (pre-planned) wires for the TRRS cable socket were much worse. Might simplify this if I make a revised version…
I still don’t have the TSSR sockets to finish soldering this wired split #MechanicalKeyboard, so for now I’m testing it as two half keyboards and trying to find the best angles for the planned single piece follow up #ErgoMechKeyboard - here’s a cardboard prototype of a ~40 degree tended keyboard. It feels a bit too high up (could be lowered about 2cm), but usable…
Filing away a little off the PCBs worked, my latest #MechanicalKeyboard is coming together - now with a #RaspberryPi RP2040-Zero soldered in each half, and the switches done. Waiting on the through hole TRRS sockets (should be OK), and the surface mounted 5-way navigation buttons - they’ll be tricky to solder I fear!

Found the first issue in my new #MechanicalKeyboard PCB design, the cut-out is not quite wide enough for the #RaspberryPi RP2040-Zero reset and boot buttons 😢
I’ll have to take a file to the PCB (outside well ventilated, with a mask on) 😷

My first under 10x10cm #MechanicalKeyboard PCBs arrived from JLCPLC - and they’re so tiny! Smol keyboard time - 15 or 16 keys on each half, and a 5-way navigation button, but no diodes using #GraphTheory http://astrobeano.blogspot.com/2025/12/5-way-switch-in-diode-free-graph-theory.html - and in further boundary pushing it should take a pair of #RaspberryPi RP2040-Zero or RP2350-Zero in TRRS wired mode, or the NRF52840 “Zero” controllers for Bluetooth (using opposite sides of the PCB rather than jumpers as they have almost equivalent footprints): https://codeberg.org/peterjc/pico-keyboards/src/branch/main/bivvy16d

I've been having fun with the artistic possibilities of #PCB design within #KiCad - I have seen some stunning bits of art in this medium ( #PCBArt)!
This #MechanicalKeyboard PCB art effort is much simpler, some line art imported as a silkscreen graphic, and then some simple texturing with the ground fill hatching.
(Why a tent? This is a small tented #ErgoMechKeyboard, meaning the PCB and keys are tilted relative to the table. The keyboard has 34 keys and the name Bivouac34 refers to a small wild camp)
So musicians can have multiple guitars hanging on their wall, and everyone is in awe.
But when programmers have multiple mechanical keyboards, they are called nerds and so on.
It is not fair.

#mechanicalkeyboard / #splitkeyboard / #ergonomickeyboard people to the rescue!
I wanted to finish the long overdue split KB for the office but can't find caps for it -_-
I'm looking for simple blank DSA keycaps without unpleasantly sharp edges for my Iris Rev.7 but simple dark or wooden themed #ortholinear keycaps seem to be hard to get these days and sold out everywhere I checked.
I'm very much not in the market for pastel colors. Help/boosts greatly appreciated
Fediverse, where do you buy your keycaps for Keychron keyboards (are there even standards?)
I want to replace the Super key on my K3 Max with one that matches the colors of the stock keyboard, but that doesn’t have the awful Windows logo.
And then there were two: This post was typed on my phone using my first self built Bluetooth #ErgoMechKeyboard, running on battery power with #ZMK firmware: the Gamma Omega Hesse. Like my other #MechanicalKeyboard designs this has a diode-free PCB using #GraphTheory. https://github.com/unspecworks/gamma-omega/tree/main/hesse

The warm fuzzy feeling the first time someone else has successfully built a #MechanicalKeyboard using your PCB design is pretty close to someone else using your #OpenSource software.
Just a shame they ran into a glitch where I’d broken the #QMK/Vial firmware, and that using #ZMK with firmware outside the main repository is a bit tricky. But we got there! 🐞⌨️
#MechanicalKeyboard folks - I'd like to emulate this railway signalling control panel, but at say 2/3rd or half normal size, so it won't be almost larger than any layout it might be attached to. Do there exist keyswitches and keycaps in smaller sizes than the standard?

New video! I reviewed a pre-production version of the new mechanical Amiga keyboards from A1200net. These are suitable for most Amiga models and fit both the new replacement keycaps and the original keycaps, retaining the original look and feel of the machines.
