#Arachtober 31: handsome little ice cream sandwich boi (male _Hentzia palmarum_ jumping spider) spotted back in August.

Damn, posting every day feels like way more work than it should. Anyway back to slightly less frequent arachnid posts tomorrow…

Jumping spider directly facing the camera, front legs spread out like it's about to jump at the camera (they do that sometimes)

#Arachtober 29: didn't have time for a proper spider outing, so hopped over the garden wall to see what I could find in the yard—and almost walked right through this cross orbweaver's web strung between the dead coneflowers and columbines! As you can hopefully see in the close-up, her jaws are full of a big lump of mushed-up bugs.

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Araneidae

A closer crop of the same photo. You can hopefully better see the spider's fangs (opening sideways like scissors) in a shiny, lumpy black bolus; and its eyes, a classic orbweaver : :: : arrangement.

A dead coneflower seen from slightly below. Under the brown, withered petals shelters a brown spider with spiky, banded legs, looking at the camera with beady little eyes. Thin lines of silk, anchor lines for a web, stretch out of frame. The background is blurry but suggests a blue sky and trees.

#Arachtober 30: a lovely female hacklemesh weaver (_Amaurobius cf. ferox_) out in the open one night, rare for them. They spend most of their time in crevices in retreats of fuzzy back-combed silk that extends some way outside, letting them sense prey passing too close. People typically encounter the mature males that go wandering in search of mates and inadvertently end up inside.

The family is closely related to the funnel-weavers (family Agelenidae).

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Amaurobiidae

A robust dark brown spider on light grey stone. Its abdomen is covered with short, glossy, velvety fur with a lighter patch over the upper centre (where the heart is located). Its head is shiny, with small uniformly sized eyes clustered at the front. The legs are finely furred with no spikes or long hairs.

#Arachtober 27: late October, we're getting frost warnings, but the orbweavers just keep on trucking. Taken just a few hours ago on a grocery run; the supermarket's large windows attract a lot of midges and are great scaffolds for the ubiquitous _Larinioides_ orbweavers.

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Araneidae

A large orbweaver silhouetted against a brightly lit window, the light showing the banding and spiky hairs on her legs, as she prepares her web for a night of trapping. In the lower right of the picture is her web full of small midges.

#Arachtober 26: sometimes on a whim you look inside a hole in a railing…

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #Araneae #Clubionidae

A closer view, and the spider has moved a bit so you can see both his pedipalps (as you can see, enlarged at the ends, but still undifferentiated) and one of his curving fangs, which kind of folds under the chelicera like a jack-knife.

It's still #Arachtober 24 somewhere: a tiny, curious zebra jumping spider (_Salticus scenicus_). It even gave me a little head tilt. WARNING: very high levels of cute

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #JumpingSpiders #spiders #Araneae #Salticidae

The zebra jumper tilts slightly to one side, facing the camera. Often when they do this they are about to try to jump on the lens, so I wrapped up the photoshoot here.

Let's kick off #Arachtober with some fall colours! This beautiful coppery jumping spider—_Eris rufa_, maybe, or _Pelegrina_?—reminded me of autumn leaves. Tried to get an even closer pic of its iridescent scales.

#ArthroBeauty #DailySpiderPic #spiders #JumpingSpiders #Araneae #Salticidae

Close-up shot from above. The jumping spider's dark head is covered in short, fine, pale hairs. Its brown abdomen is covered with many small flat scale-like hairs that produce a pastel iridescence, like those "holo" highlight pressed powders that were a popular makeup trend a while back.

It has a shiny copper-coloured abdomen, red-brown legs banded with a more golden brown (a sort of tortoiseshell colour scheme), and a black-brown head with a broad white band along each side. The tops of the pedipalps, too, are white.

Her impeccable lashes

#DailySpiderPic#JumpingSpiders #spiders#Araneae#Salticidae

A light grey and white female Platycryptus undatus jumping spider, facing the camera head on. She is the same colour as the concrete she's on. She has fluffy white pedipalps, a white face, and two tufts of wispy lashes (pointing at a perfect 45° and 90°) on either side of the small anterior lateral eyes flanking her large black anterior median eyes.

i had to break out the fancy camera to get a night shot but here is ms. window orbweaver.

approx. 12-15mm body length, maybe?

#ArthroBeauty#DailySpiderPic#SpidersOfMastodon #spiders#Araneae#Araneidae

A bridge spider (Larinioides sclopetarius) just below the hub of her web, feeding on a small glistening lump that was once a fly. She is grey-brown with a damask-like leaf-shaped pattern on the top of her abdomen and a white-bordered carapace. The image is a bit washed out because it was taken with flash at night through a window.

Window orbweaver update: all quiet tonight. I felt bad for her meagre haul, so earlier today I captured a greenbottle fly, then later when she came out I carefully removed the window-screen and held the fly against the web with tweezers until she sensed and captured it. She has spent the past few hours feeding on it.

The broad, dense canopies of tansy flowers (Tanasetum) are a perfect home for small jumping spiders like this juvenile bold jumper (Phidippus audax)!

Yesterday I was going up to a park bench to lock my bike to it when I saw the most enormous bold jumping spider (Phidippus audax) poking her head out from between two slats. She had a spacious silk retreat with a well-wrapped egg sac. She was shy, but I gradually lured her out by lightly dragging a blade of grass across one opening of the retreat, and she stalked and pounced on it, like a cat.

I find that contrary to their name bold jumpers are very shy at first, but once they've gotten used to you they are unafraid and will climb all over you. Unfortunately I didn't have time to properly make friends with this spider.
