was looking for recordings of some old Bundist songs and found this great 1972 LP I'd been unaware of on the Dartmouth Jewish Sound Archive. 🕵️ good stuff

My organization, the Peretz Centre in #Vancouver, is doing a membership drive for the new year. If you're interested in #Yiddish culture & literature, Jewish secular humanism & social justice, consider checking out the programming or becoming a member. It's the organization's 80th year!🥺⏳

I had luck last time on the badsite; let's see how lingo/fedi can do:
this term I'm teaching an intro linguistics course with a typology/diversity lens
I love to harness the expertise of myfriends/colleagues to show students languages that I know very little about
SO if you know/use/study a language that's not normative AmEng, I need YOU to tell my students why your language is cool! 🧵

ouch lol. satirical comic in the Morgn Freiheit, #Yiddish language communist paper from NYC from their 9 May 1936 issue ridiculing their competitor the Forverts as being on the level of the Hearst papers.

"You've been breathing for years, ma!"
"It ain't easy."
"no-goodnik plant" lmao
Poor Yankel, I mean Jacob. #yiddish
Time for "The Little Shop of Horrors" (1960) on #Monsterdon! 🧵
Glorying in all the Yiddishism here. "You want I should…" "…for to…" and wait, is the mourning customer called Mrs. Shiva?
Side note, VA Ben Galpin's best moment is not actually in Re: Dracula; it's his absolutely unhinged reading of a Dracula version of the infamous "Jurgen Leitner rant"* from #TheMagnusArchives / #tma fandom. I especially like his reading of "I would piss on God's feet". (mp3, post)
- A fan's rant in some Discord occasioned by a recurring background character being mentioned in the podcast one too many times. This is my favourite rendition.
Incidentally, Yiddish emerged about a thousand years ago, solidly in the medieval period—so there is no such thing as "ancient Yiddish" and the earliest form would pretty much be Middle High German.
Also, I've mentioned this before on a previous account, but I don't think there's a direct equivalent to "to fuck up" in Yiddish. There's a lot of words for a person who fucks up, and for general fucked-upness, but as far as I know there isn't an obscene verb for fucking up. If anyone knows more, please tell me.
Oy Frigging Vey is a version of the Yiddish saying Oy Vey, which is now used in all languages like "oh wow" or to show disbelief or frustration.
We have more Yiddish and Yiddish curse designs too!

out today - including the work of many good friends of mine:
"In the face of the ongoing genocidal assault on the Palestinian people, “LIDER MIT PALESTINE: New Yiddish Songs of Grief, Fury, and Love” is a collection of 17 original songs steeped in history and heritage [...] All proceeds (excluding shipping costs and Bandcamp's and Paypal's processing fees), go to Gaza Birds Singing — a musical, educational, and therapeutic project in Gaza."

it's been around for a while, but it came up in a group chat again today.. are people aware of this audio streaming site from the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine where you can listen to curated wax cylinders of Jewish music from An-sky, Kiselhof, Magid, Beregovsky etc. expeditions?😁

Fair warning: I kind of despise Jacobin, and Balthazar is a shitty writer... but this novel sounds amazing!
"It's something of a truism to say history does not reveal the past but rather the present: the refracted light of dead stars, to use the French philosopher Daniel Bensaïd’s image of the gone revolutions, will disappear in a daylight of mere facts if not recognized as a “concern of the present.” Annie Kaufman’s new translation of Ben Gold’s 1944 #Yiddish language #proletarian #novel Your Comrade, Avreml Broide: A Worker’s Life Story is one of those events, in which a seemingly lost footnote of left-wing #American #history suddenly brushes against the grain of the present."
