And I don't remember if I posted this. It has already begun last week, but still interesting to know if you are interested in #yiddish and/or #OralHistory :
"This fall, the Other Music Academy (best known as the organizer of Yiddish Summer Weimar) invites intermediate Yiddish students to join The New Zamlers, a seven-session online workshop that connects Germany and the United States through storytelling. Inspired by the historic zamlers—volunteers who once gathered words, folklore, and everyday accounts for the Yiddish archives—participants will interview each other to collect and present contemporary Yiddish life stories. The course, led by Adrien Smith (University of Texas at Austin) and Jake Schneider (Berlin-based Yiddish activist and poet), combines language practice with oral history training, peer-to-peer interviews, and reading and discussions about present-day Yiddish culture and community.
All sessions will be conducted in Yiddish, appropriate for students who are able (or currently learning) to ask questions and express opinions on familiar topics. Over two months, participants will strengthen their speaking and listening skills, gain hands-on experience with oral history methods, and participate in the creation of new Yiddish narratives. As a final project, students will create short multimedia stories based on their interviews and share them in celebratory “watch parties.” Alongside developing language and research skills, the project offers the chance to build connections with fellow learners across the Atlantic and to think about how Yiddish is lived, reclaimed, and narrated today."

and an article (AFP) about Yiddish Summer Weimar #YSW
among other sites: https://uk.news.yahoo.com/food-soul-germanys-yiddish-revival-071623387.html
"A push to revitalise Yiddish and its cultural traditions has gained momentum in Germany, the very place where the Nazi regime's Holocaust sought to eradicate the Jewish communities who spoke it.
Thousands flocked to the city of Weimar for a recent festival that celebrated the linguistic tradition with workshops, cabaret performances and even heart-stopping circus acrobatics.
Musical offerings ranged from traditional klezmer performances on violin and accordion evoking the Central Europe of old to more modern shows, including psychedelic Yiddish rock."
The Forverts published an article about a content creator who asked people about Yiddish in Jerusalem:
"Yirmiyahu Danzig (aka @that_semite on Instagram and @Unpacked on YouTube), an Israeli Jewish rights and anti-racism activist of Caribbean and Ashkenazi descent, usually explores questions of identity on his Instagram account in English, Hebrew and Arabic. But last week, he posted a video where he speaks to Orthodox passers-by on the streets of Jerusalem — in Yiddish."
Danzig seems (as far as I can hear!) to be a good illustration of a neo-speaker that do not speak "akademiker yidish".
(some of his text is wrong: Jewish languages are not creoles)
My good friend Itamar who I work with at the Peretz Centre is giving this talk at UBC on Nov 17th: "Of Bubbies and Bundists: Re-approaching Modern Eastern European Jewish History"
In person, but there's a zoom option too.

enjoying this part 2 interview with Daniel Kahn on Radiant Others featuring some great deep discussions about the beauty and challenges of performing unashamedly leftist #Yiddish music and finding meaning in old songs. and some old gossip I didn't know about 😅Like I didn't know a disgruntled audience member literally tried pulling the plug on the debut of Dumai at a #klezmer festival😳

I've been researching old Bundist songs for a workshop for a few weeks now and I can't believe I didn't know about this book till now. Arbeyt un Frayhayt, a collection of #Yiddish revolutionary, workers and folk songs mostly dating to 1903-05, published by Schmul Lehman in Warsaw in 1921.

coming across her (excellent) name in a benefit concert from 1935 in an article in the Brooklyn Eagle reminded me about Kitty Okryenetz (1925-2006), a small-time Yiddish singer & entertainer whose 1953 album I was charmed by years ago. (free account required to stream the album.)

Back then I tried emailing FAU to ask if they had any more info about the context/donors of this album, but they said no. With my improved research skills since then it's pretty easy to find Kitty's grandkids on Facebook (I can see) though I'm not sure how much they'd know about this stuff.
here's the article in the Brooklyn Eagle from 1935 that reminded me of Okryenetz. to show up as a child dancer among some of the greats of old #Yiddish singers (Moishe Oysher!) goes a long way to explain the quality and range of her 1950s cassette album lol. Not to mention a lecture by Avram Reisen.
