out today - including the work of many good friends of mine:
"In the face of the ongoing genocidal assault on the Palestinian people, “LIDER MIT PALESTINE: New Yiddish Songs of Grief, Fury, and Love” is a collection of 17 original songs steeped in history and heritage [...] All proceeds (excluding shipping costs and Bandcamp's and Paypal's processing fees), go to Gaza Birds Singing — a musical, educational, and therapeutic project in Gaza."

it's been around for a while, but it came up in a group chat again today.. are people aware of this audio streaming site from the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine where you can listen to curated wax cylinders of Jewish music from An-sky, Kiselhof, Magid, Beregovsky etc. expeditions?😁

Fair warning: I kind of despise Jacobin, and Balthazar is a shitty writer... but this novel sounds amazing!

"It's something of a truism to say history does not reveal the past but rather the present: the refracted light of dead stars, to use the French philosopher Daniel Bensaïd’s image of the gone revolutions, will disappear in a daylight of mere facts if not recognized as a “concern of the present.” Annie Kaufman’s new translation of Ben Gold’s 1944 #Yiddish language #proletarian #novel Your Comrade, Avreml Broide: A Worker’s Life Story is one of those events, in which a seemingly lost footnote of left-wing #American #history suddenly brushes against the grain of the present."

Wish I could see this lol😁 written by Mikhl Yashinsky, who I'm obsessed about, directed by Michael “Mikhele” Leibenluft, music by the same musician trio who created Shterna and the Lost Voice. A very gay #Yiddish musical

"#Yiddish #music lovers, this one’s for you: A free outdoor Yiddish music #concert and singalong is once again happening in #NewYorkCity this summer.

#NewYork Sings Yiddish,” presented by Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage and the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene, makes a triumphant return to #CentralPark on Monday, June 30.

This all-star celebration of Yiddish music and culture will feature performances from a host of #Jewish music all-stars, including #klezmer legend Frank London, rapper-singer-dancer-actor Lea Kalisch and klezmer-punk troubadour Daniel Kahn."

"#YIVO’s story, which began in 1925 in #Vilna (now #Vilnius) as a means to lend scholarly legitimacy to the #Yiddish language and #Jewish people of Eastern #Europe, took a more existential turn in #WorldWarII, by which time YIVO’s headquarters had relocated to #NewYork, with most of its materials remaining behind."

שלום אליכם!

Isabel's album came out this week, including finally a studio recording of her song Langzam un Likhtik which was set for my choir back in 2020 with her permission. Sounds great.

"Unhurried and radiant
Your forehead bent to my forehead
Until your black fire sank into
My blue fire.

And my room filled with summer,
And my room became full of night.
I closed my light-filled, tear-filled eyes,
And wept silently in my late summer."
