apparently 30 peeps in #Montreal threw on Santa + elf drip, rolled into a grocery, gangsta’d ~3K in food, and re-distributed it to hungry folks.

#Montreal was rated #1 bicycle city in North America this year.
But the party that won the municipal election in November campaigned on auditing and removing bike lanes.
They’ve already started in my borough, #Outremont.
So we made our own bike lane this morning. We want, and need, to keep our kids active—and safe.

On a ride on #Montreal 's newly opened REM light-metro line, I learned that the builders discovered crates full of explosives.
They'd been cached in bedrock in a century-old tunnel around the time of the Spanish Flu, and then forgotten.
Here's the view through the 5-km-long tunnel...

Something very cool just happened to #Montreal.
Last week I got to ride on the REM line, now fully open from Brossard to Deux-Montagnes.
Automated. Electric. Frequent (2.5 minute headways). Fast (100 km/h plus). Cheap to build. (One tenth the price of other systems)
And really fun to ride...

Nice detail in #Montréal’s Edouard-Montpetit REM station: natural rock walls. The platforms are 73 metres below the street—height of a 20 storey building. The rock is gabbro, a very hard igneous rock. 100,000 kg of explosives were used to build the station.
You take an elevator or stairs down from street level to a bank of 5 elevators. The station is 72 m underground, deepest in Canada. The elevator ride down takes just 20 seconds—and it’s fast. My ears popped…
Here’s the front-end view of the new REM line to Deux-Montagnes in #Montréal. Between Côte-de-
Liesse and Montpellier. A very smooth ride so far…
Postcard from #Montréal. Bixis under the snow. I rode my own winter bike to work. Rough sledding, with few of the streets plowed. And 20 cm on Nov. 11 is a bit much, ‘stie!

#IETF124 was, of course, great, but I also enjoyed Montreal a lot.
My flight home is only this afternoon so I went for a walk to grab some bagels and check out Habitat 67.
