I just saw a YouTube video titled “How White Supremacy Hijacked Christianity.”

And without even watching it, I already disagree.

White supremacy didn’t hijack Christianity.
Christianity, as practiced in the United States, is white supremacy.

From its inception on this land, Christian doctrine has served as the moral scaffolding for genocide, enslavement, colonization, and systemic control. It didn’t just accompany those atrocities…it justified them.

Christian doctrine was the weapon used to rationalize the annihilation of Indigenous peoples. It was the tool used to sanctify the enslavement of Africans.

It convinced generations of Black people that the suffering, violence, and exploitation we endured were “tests of faith.” The price we had to pay for a promised Heaven that would finally make sense of our earthly torment.

And then there’s the myth of Manifest Destiny. Another story we were all taught, celebrated, and took pride in. It declared that white Christians were chosen by God to expand westward, no matter the cost. That the displacement, starvation, and death of Indigenous people were not atrocities but divine purpose. That the theft of land and the spread of white dominance were somehow acts of faith.

That myth wasn’t an accident. It was theology weaponized to make conquest feel holy.

Christian doctrine continues to drive the global missionary business. A machine built on the extraction of labor, land, and dignity from so-called “savages,” funneling both wealth and moral authority back into the hands of white folx who, of course, see themselves as better stewards.

It’s this same doctrine that allows white supremacists to bastardize the teachings of Christ, teachings rooted in love, care, and compassion, and weaponize them to uphold power, maintain dominance,

and vilify anyone whose life actually embodies those principles.

And it’s Christian doctrine that enables white people to frame the story however they choose. Always casting themselves as the hero, or the victim, but never the villain.

So no, Christianity hasn’t been hijacked.
It’s been exposed.

Exposed for what it has always been in practice here…a system designed to moralize domination, sanitize violence, and center whiteness as divine.

And while that truth is uncomfortable for many to confront, it’s necessary. Because until we tell the truth about the roots, we will never heal the branches.
