White “progressives” and “liberals” have always pivoted right when it benefited them.
Ijeoma Oluo writes in Mediocre: The Dangerous Legacy of White Male America that during George Wallace’s first run for governor of Alabama, “he was outspoken against the KKK and was even endorsed by the NAACP.” But after losing the primary to an openly white supremacist opponent, Wallace made a calculated shift.
He decided that aligning himself with white rage was a more reliable path to power. His next campaign would adopt the now-infamous stance: “Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever.”
That moment wasn’t an exception…it was a blueprint.
Time and time again, white “progressives” and “liberals” have proven that their commitment to justice, equity, or even basic decency, ends the moment it threatens their comfort, access, or power.
When the political winds shift, they don’t double down on principle and they pivot.
Every.
Single.
Time.
We see it today in policy, in media narratives, in the quiet justifications for “law and order” politics when white discomfort rises. In the way white “progressives” claim to “believe in diversity” while defunding equity programs, staying silent when Black leaders are attacked, or rallying around white mediocrity when competence and courage are most needed.
White liberals love to distance themselves from conservatives, as if complicity requires a MAGA hat.
But history keeps proving that when whiteness feels threatened, even the self-proclaimed “good ones” will find a way to return to the safety of supremacy.
It’s not new.
It’s not shocking.
It’s just the latest chapter in a centuries-old story…the myth of white supremacy doesn’t need loyalty, it only needs convenience.
