Today I joined an interesting panel on Building sovereign digital public spaces, organised by @DIGITALSME .

I particularly enjoyed the presentations by @seabass.bsky.social
(EuroSky) and @philipkristians (Mastodon).

Although I am a big fan of Mastodon, and the Fediverse more broadly, I have to say that Sebastian’s presentation was especially well done. It was interesting to learn how actively he engages in Brussels to discuss EuroSky; next week, for instance, he’ll be meeting with the Green Party.

I do wish we could see more of this kind of political outreach from the Mastodon team as well, though I understand the constraints that come with being a non-profit.

The event organisers will soon publish the videos, including responses to questions from the audience.

For Sebastian:

1) Given EuroSky’s engagement with public institutions, do you see Fediverse bridges as a default feature, so that users, including elected officials, are not isolated from existing networks like Mastodon from day one?

2) How do the costs of running a new server using the Bluesky AT Protocol compare to running servers based on ActivityPub, given that thousands of ActivityPub-compatible servers (e.g. Mastodon, Pixelfed) already exist?

@everton137

to note : a bridge is not a working strategy to here as not every instance of fediverse is willing to have to deal with the BS network moderation (accepting extreme right / fash government) and potential privacy issues (like block lists f.ex.)

@DIGITALSME @philipkristians @olm_e I agree. But to use a bridge by default is better than the need to opt-in.

@everton137 It may not have been said, but we (Mastodon) are also actively meeting with organisations. Next week we have meetings planned with the EU commission and I will represent Mastodon at a panel in the EU parliament organised by the Greens.

Maybe we need to communicate more about it, but we definitely have far less comms/marketing resources than others.

And for Philip:

- In what ways can European or decentralised platforms help public institutions, particularly elected officials, leave dominant harmful networks like X without losing their reach?

I was also interested to discover @quodari. However, I have to say it didn’t convince me, mainly because I understood that it does not rely on any interoperability protocol.

The answers to my three questions were not fully complete, nor did they include concrete numbers. Still, it was useful to understand how these initiatives are evolving, and how important it is to have the resources to engage regularly in Brussels.

The organisers will publish the full video recordings soon:

@everton137 I had a look as well. Decent sales pitch but it was very disappointed how the fact that Eurosky plans to be 100% hosted on US tech owned infrastructure was not addressed.

(current registration via their registration form actually go to a US hosted Hubspot server..).

*it doesn't matter where they physically host stuff. As even MS now publicly admits, the moment a US company is involved, the US government can, legally according to their laws, demand access to user data.

@everton137 @quodari if the EU citizens move, politicians will follow. To facilitate exposure of citizens to open source alternatives, I would suggest looking at this link. https://european-alternatives.eu/
