@daniel What would you suggest as an alternative (not a facetious question - I'm genuinely curious)?

@daniel
" #Signal isn’t just AWS."

Correct, it uses AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Cloudflare and Cloudflare's DNS servers hard-coded.

@daniel but it's a big step for most of the people!

However the problem is that most people don't even think about switching from WA to Signal - and NEVER heard about conversations #XMPP

#Schools could / MUST do more! Instead they are pushing students into digital dependencies. School leaders avoid the hassle to think, they appreciate conformity.

@ApostateEnglishman I'm trying to phrase my statements in a way in which they don't sound like an advert, but I'm developing and Android instant messaging client called #Conversations_im which uses a federated instant messaging network called Jabber or XMPP.

@daniel @ApostateEnglishman I don't develop an xmpp client so it's not a problem if phrase it like an advert, right?

I second the recommendation for XMPP, as it is properly and actively federated, with an ecosystem that encourages small, healthy, community hosted, servers (hosting one for ~20 users is about as hard, expensive and time consuming as self-hosting a static website)

I third that on XMPP. Been using it since 2001 (when I reluctantly left ICQ). Sound, well tried protocol.
OTOH, I also, as a user, not developer, recommend Converstations.im on Android. By far my favourite XMPP/Jabber app. And I have been using quite a few of them over the years.
Plus, don't forget the OMEMO encryption, quite important, which feels solid on Conversations.

@daniel u need molly.im with https://github.com/mollyim/mollysocket for unified push 🙃

GitHub

GitHub - mollyim/mollysocket: MollySocket allows getting Signal notifications via UnifiedPush.

@fluttersh yes and that's an extremely cumbersome work around for something they should be offering natively.

@daniel If I am not wrong, Signal does offer on their website, variants of their app without google's blobs implemented. I saw them on their github as well.
