The UK government's climbdown over mandatory Digital ID is a victory for ORG and other groups that warned of the threats to everyone's civil liberties.

BUT questions still remain.

Despite this latest U-turn, neither the scheme nor the giant pricetag have gone away entirely.

Even if it's voluntary, Digital ID still creates a surveillance infrastructure.

This could be expanded later on as a requirement to access public services.

As we've seen with eVisas, digitalising interactions with the UK State without physical backups creates serious problems.

Our pressure on the government to back down on Digital IDs worked.

But as long as it remains a government project, our data and privacy is at risk. The fight isn’t over.
