I wrote a speculative piece, just about 2 years to the month, about Meta's regulatory capture strategy that involves an attack on #Mastodon, even as #Threads and #ActivityPub leaders were working together to interpolate.

Just waiting on Zuck to launch a timely protocol that makes it easy to migrate from Mastodon to Threads.

Copy, Acquire, Kill— How Meta could pull off the most extraordinary pivot in tech history

Meta's Threads.net sure looks a lot like App.net. Is Meta due for a pivot? The legislation the company supports suggests yes.

#Mastodon is now finally speaking out but it may be too little too late. We had the chance to reject #Meta's plan to take over the #SocialWeb but a few influential #Fediverse leaders decided for us that our future on the social web would include Meta.

Even now, as Mastodon Org speaks up, they refuse to call the enemy by name, referring to Meta as "another corporate social media platform"

The world needs social sovereignty

The world needs to log off corporate-owned, centrally-controlled social media platforms and log on to a better way of being online. The world needs an open social web through the fediverse and Mastodon.
Mastodon also offers a better way. We empower people to verify themselves by linking their social profile to their official (or personal) website. This allows for greater transparency and trust than relying on the often less-than-reputable verification practices of a single corporate entity, especially one that is willing to sell reputation for a low monthly fee. (Meanwhile, another corporate social media platform made $16 billion, 10% of their 2024 revenue, from advertisements for scams and banned goods.)
