'Niiname-sai', the 'Harvest of the 5 Cereals' (新嘗祭), can be traced back to at least Emperor Tenmu (631-86), and continues to be celebrated by the imperial household.

Newly harvested rice, grains and other foods are dedicated to the gods.

During the imperial celebrations the emperor symbolically eats the first new rice of the year, and gives thanks for a successful harvest.

At many shrines the harvest offerings are proudly displayed.

Shioyoshiken's (塩芳軒) 'hanasusuki' (花すすき 'susuki fronds'), served in a 'fuchidaka' (縁高). Depending on the number of guests, the lacquered sweet boxes can be stacked up to 5 tiers. As the lids only sit on each layer, be careful when passing it along👐

The scroll in the alcove reads...
"Kanza shite shōfū o kiku"🌬️🎐
閑坐聴松風
"To sit quietly and listen to the sound of wind in the pines."

In the tearoom the sound of the hot water boiling is likened to wind rustling through pines.

Much like Christmas, it always feels as if the autumn colours will never arrive...

...but just like that they're here and it doesn't feel as if there's enough time to enjoy them🥹
