The first in a new series “Flying Geese”, inspired by the “Flying Geese” quilt pattern. It continues on with the themes in all the work I’ve been exploring lately on migration, climate change, and other reasons people leave home, seek new places to call home. Using textiles as inspiration.
These simple geometric shapes are a nice contrast to the many details of the rug paintings which take a long time to complete.

A woman with dark short hair under a hat in grey with golden yellow triangular crown-like ray shapes. She wears a golden emergency blanket emphasizing the trianglular shapes from the folds. She sits in profile, head turned back looking at viewer. Mountains are behind her in neutral grey tones, warm & cool, also emphasizing these shapes as light hits the mountain sides. Some solid black triangles in foreground standing in as rock and tree.
In the sky faded out is a flying geese quilt pattern in a loose migration formation.

I had used metallic gold paint at first which looked good, then applied gold leaf to make the emergency blanket she is wearing, but it was hard to apply well and it didn’t seem to stick well enough, so didn’t look good, and I painted over in non metallic ochre oil paint. I might try to add metallic gold oil paint later.
I did a full under painting in acrylic.

There is a lot of symbolism with quilting patterns, and history. The way women’s work is constantly underestimated and undervalued allowed for women to be of significant help to signal that their home is a safe house to stay in, or can provide clothing to Black people fleeing slavery in the USA. The flying geese showed them the direction North to head to Canada. It was a compass.
