Lovely #repaircafe today in Chester on international #repair day. Thank you to all our volunteers and visitors on our 2nd birthday! 🎂🙏
"What you people need is a union."
"You don't understand. Ferengi workers don't want to stop the exploitation. We want to find a way to become the exploiters"
I think this is a case of when people show you who they are believe them.
We had the warnings this summer.
The term "single use software" currently lives rent free in my head.
People use LLMs to create software specific for their needs. But neither can other people use it (hardcoded variables, no rights management, too specific), nor do they use it again (too specific, easier to produce a new one).
Single use software is not maintained. Nobody understands it or has an interest in keeping it working.
The creation of single use software feels cheap, but isn't. It takes time to create the software, it needs infrastructure and power. The time is experienced as short compared to how long it takes to create maintainable and reusable software. But once you take into account how many people benefit from reusable software, the single use software takes way more time to create than what it saves. The infrastructure and power costs are hidden because the data center isn't visible. The costs are subsidized by venture capital.
Like other single use items, single use software brings risks of unforeseen consequences. From data loss or leaks to issues for maintainers of reusable software (eg. verbal abuse, less motivation and lost income).
As an example of single use software is a German LinkedIn post of a person who slopcoded a HEMS (home energy management system). It took them more than a week. While open source projects like https://evcc.io/ already provide the same functionality. They could have used it for free or paid 100€ and got support for some additional devices. But they decided that they know better how it should work and now have a single use software. If it breaks there is nobody they can ask. There won't be updates and no community to discuss and develop new features. No organization will ever be interested in officially supporting it. And even if it works, it only benefits that one person.
(This doesn't mean people shouldn't build things that only they use. But they should enjoy doing so.)
Can’t help thinking this is a fight club reference too
@neil
Oi! My chicken balti is iconic!
@Jaimieserotica Ooh, nice!
@ryanprior We always had dipshits in software, but somehow AI made them drop their mask, for everyone to see.
That's probably the only good thing that came out of AI.
Hi y’all, I’m at the Anarchist Tech Convergence in Montreal and dipping my toes back into the social media waters with this #introduction post!

I refuse to believe I will actually be missed.
@bstacey I would be sorry to see you go, but that should not stop you from leaving if you feel that's what you have to do.
If your camera isnt being used for birds you shouldnt be able to call it flock
NetBSD deciding to take money from FUTO is a personal "fuck you" to me for even thinking I could be helpful I guess 🙃
edit to say that this isn't me going "woag netbsd bad now" its exasperation at the idea that i have to be hypervigilant to takeovers of like every bit of computing that I rely on
They wanted to make Free Software illegal and have all computers approved by the government.
Hey, just discovered the fediverse ! For the moment, seems like an architechture similar to matrix (many individual servers), but closer to an usage to instagram or twitter ! Very cool, thank's MATC !

We now note that that we do not waive our attribution requirements for Spritely Goblins, which are present in Apache v2 (and for that matter, CC BY, CC BY-SA, and most FOSS licenses) https://codeberg.org/spritely/goblins/pulls/998/files
So if you train on our codebase, you have to retain attribution, which we consider the most important requirement to motivate development of technology in the commons.
If, somehow, you are using a statistical soup which has no way to preserve attribution, well, we don't permit or approve of dropping such a requirement, and actually, the licenses we use never have.
