It's nominally about "artificial intelligence" but in typical philosophical fashion, it's actually about, uh, colonialism, Catholicism, Van Gogh's weird fucked-up blood and thinking really hard about one specific random photograph of a street.

Listen, we are never going to get a big feature in The Atlantic or The New Yorker about how healthy, mentally freeing, and spiritually grounding it can be to purge all advertisements from your life, or about how so often this is impossible. (Dear reader can you infer why this will never happen?)

But, maybe we can start a stealth campaign of our own. What is freedom? No ads.

It's a bad feeling that I need to do a certification to prove that I can do statistical programming and that my PhD isn't enough, neither the R packages nor the academic papers that I wrote on the subject

It's kind of nice to have this brainless task that I can do incrementally (learn SAS and do the exam) that just might materially change things for me in my job search, and that isn't just more of the same applications that haven't got me a job yet

i passed physics but still failed to get off academic probation. apparently missing10 of 16 weeks worth of classes was not a path to academic success.

@mattblaze @LabSpokane I have lots of favorite things about this talk. One of them is that he wears his backpack for the whole thing. He has props stashed in pockets and all over the stage so you really have to wonder what kind of turbo-powered exhibits are in that backpack, just in case.

Hitting things with swords sounds like exercise which is bad, but also relaxing, which is good. Not relaxing for the things I'm hitting, probably.

Or spears. Spears are underrated. "Hey, that thing should have more holes and also not get too close to me." What's not to like, assuming you are not the thing someone believes should have more holes.
