"In this study, we investigated whether galah, as a model species for birds in general, enjoy flying. We show here, as a first, that when given the choice, galahs actively choose to fly, display increased crest raising, scratching and foraging post-flight suggestive for increased arousal, and make more optimistic choices in a cognitive bias task after consecutive days of free flight for approximately half an hour per day."
Romance may have distracted two of the study participants, however:
"In our study, 15 out of the 17 birds chose free flight whenever given the opportunity to do so. The two birds that chose not to fly only did so during on one occasion. A possible explanation for this ‘outlier’ could be that on this particular day, new nest-boxes were installed in the aviary that specifically attracted the attention of these two birds, that in fact were a mating pair."
