Maybe one way to describe it: it was as if you discovered you shared a language with someone that you didn’t even know you spoke. And that this language allowed you to understand express things that you could not understand or express in many decades of communicating in your “native” tongue. What would that feel like?

I appreciated Codeberg’s new policy to prohibit “vibe-coded” projects and the reasoning provided for it.

Some people criticized it as vague, but it’s not: they’re simply banning a pattern of single-person projects generating CI/CD load and release cadence like they have a community and dozens of apps to support when they actually don’t.

The part I love most is the emphasis on collaboration: the free/libre ecosystem is about *people* making software and sharing with each other. Small ideas taken seriously are always the seed of something bigger. There’s a community at the heart.

LLM-generated code is more code and less commons, with hardly anyone maintaining it once it’s out.

Their resource argument is also pertinent and shocking: a drive they used to source for€700 costs €3,700 now (!), if it’s in stock at all. Plus, the site is already under heavy load from crawlers. This is taxing.

I think people aren’t used to seeing this kind of discourse because years of VC money subsidizing their services made everyone forget that things have a cost. Donor money is finite, and spending it all on resource-heavy projects is not what these people pay for.

The way they’re going about also seems fair: no purging, no sudden mass deletion, no massive scan of repos and naming names. It’s just a statement of intent applied gradually from here onwards. There’s ample time for people to decide this isn’t for them and move to alternatives.

I really like that this is a community project deciding what their commons is for, and making amendments to their terms to protect it.
