@benpate So, my main takeaway from this is that so many of us are having fun on the Fediverse, we forget to participate in conversations *outside* the Fediverse, like on Reddit.
But that's the point where new people are finding us. The conversations about the Fediverse happening inside siloed social networks are the threshold people have to cross to get here.
We should be on the other side, welcoming them.

@onepict @Abstract_Mage_Annastasia @davidgerard Exactly. The great man of history model works great for a history written after the fact by pushy, malignant victors. But magnificent "I am no man" one-liners aside, no actual tide of social causality actually happens without some kind of public participation to make it happen. That's why the jerks work so hard to manufacture consent, and atomized individual helplessness too. There's no neutral position - even passive standing around is a response to the times - so these empires require people to *think* they're being neutral and not making waves, while being droplets in a crashing wave.
I'm hoping that this is going to be a pivot moment in public awareness of their own power. The cognitive dissonance of fake neutrality is there, and if you point it out, some people will see it, until that becomes the popular understanding (eventually). "You're standing for something, even if you never asked to be. You should choose what that thing is."

@MaddieM4 @Abstract_Mage_Annastasia @davidgerard With being sick and broke we're at the sharp edges of society. We still have something to lose, but I think it gives a clarity when you're not in the group that benefits from the status quo.
My Grandfather helped the British Underground in France until he Nazis got him. The interesting thing with resistance is that not everyone feels they can resist. But not all resistance was sabotage. Sometimes it was shelter or information gathering.

It's not even that resisters were an elite, they just couldn't ignore it, they had to try.

I literally cannot conceive of a thing that isn’t about politics in our current society. My breakfast is about politics. The weather is about politics. When I buy groceries that’s politics. My job is a political act. When I spend time with friends later today that act will also be political. And not because we’ll be protesting but because existing as queer brown women in public is a political act. The fact that so many of my friends are disabled or neurodivergent or sex workers is political
And yet I still hear people say "I don't do politics," which makes me want to scream "Well politics is doing you, dipshit, and everyone you care about."
