@lordbowlich As I recall the main thing we got scolded about was leaving the lights on. And lights have gotten way more efficient since then, as have most other things. LED and OLED TVs use a lot less energy than a CRT. Refrigerators and air conditioners are way more efficient than they were. Water heaters are better insulated, and mine is very cheap to run in the summer because it's a heat pump. Dishwashers use way less water and energy now.
@lordbowlich I also think the oil crisis led to a lot of energy consciousness among boomers and older GenXers, whereas capitalism has handled climate change largely by convincing us that we can consume our way to a better world.

I’ve been a little bewildered about electricity in my lifetime. I recall a childhood in the 80s where electricity was treated as a scarce resource that we were reminded by parents and TV to be constantly mindful about conserving.
And now we treat it like it’s free.
