@mavnn whiskers for standard errors, whiskies for all the other kinds of errors
Has anyone done a proper study of how much productivity is *lost*, globally, due to ridiculous jankyness of "enterprise" software?
Billions of people dealing everyday with having to re-type long poorly implemented forms, decade-old bugs. random crashes, cloud outages.
Surely this is an interesting thing to measure?
@rysiek You can do it per context, but that would need to be aggregated across all contexts. We did it in my unit and I wrote tools to plug those holes which allowed me to reclassify employees as their actual decision making time increased. But that would only apply to the set of workers using those specific tools. You could perhaps extrapolate across multiple such efforts.
Is there any non-introspective (non-linguistic) evidence for "feeling" components?
In the memory space, there are measurable functional and neurophysiological differences between the different kinds of memory, including episodic memory, semantic memory, motoric memory, transient priming memory, etc. For example, the autonoetic process of the "feeling of memory" is well-established both functionally and neurophysiologically. At this point, no one seriously (to my knowledge) argues for the "introspective" side of memory, even in the human data.
@adredish @albertcardona
Great question! As far as I understand, it’s all pretty tangled up. Disgust isn’t just a label, it’s the strong motivation to avoid. The assumption by many is that the feeling is central to the function (in a way it’s not for memory).
There are treatments that treat affect functionally - more often for mood as far as I’ve seen; eg increases risk seeking and such.
It’s a great Q: let’s assume emotions are functional; how far can we go with that? Do we see any evidence otherwise?
The sociologist Tressie McMillan-Cottom says it's men taking a private failure and transforming it into a social crisis.
Like, make some friends and go to therapy -- but did they do that? No.
They created the manosphere, red pills, incels, and now we have at least 2.5 generations of men/boys utterly unable to handle their shit and punishing the women around them for it.
It's yuck.
No, we do not have a “male loneliness” epidemic. We have, as so often in history, a male *selfishness* epidemic, and the body count is, as usual, astronomical.
This will launch a thousand awful headlines blaming phones and stirring up the creepy pronatalists. There are also a thousand factors at work: start with a fucked up economy and world.

Whatever you do, don't blame the billionaires who are stealing everyone's future.
There IS no "old GOP."
What are you even talking about? What "old GOP" - Lincoln? They've been fascist since at LEAST the 60's.

Fits on a Floppy: A Manifesto for Small Software
«
Software should be as small as it can be. Not as a gimmick, but as a discipline. The floppy disk is the measuring stick: 1.44 MB. If the software that ran entire businesses could fit in that space, then a modern, focused, single-purpose tool certainly can.

This was a really interesting result. It will be useful to review in the future!
Prodromoumarket vs Polymarket
Hospital for yet another checkup on my heart after having an operation a couple of years ago (and being given the all clear last year). With the AuDHD Dx they don't want to give me any meds that might stress my heart unnecessarily. Fair enough. Have my tests done. Apparently I have 'amazing' blood pressure and the heart rate of an athlete. Bit weird but yay. Finally get in to see the cardiology doctor. Different from my normal one. And he starts asking why I want to be autistic and tells me it's so trendy at the moment. That lots of people are after adhd medication for fun. That it's the human condition and a spectrum and everyone's on it and he's probably a bit autistic aswell or whatever. Asked (scoffing) who diagnosed me. I gently explained that it was about 40 people over 3 years and that there were endless assessments and interviews and meetings and tests. Made an unconvinced noise then said well I suppose we better do some further tests on you then. 👍
I remember when I was a kid thinking doctors and lawyers and teachers and nurses and police were morally beyond reproach. Held to a higher standard. Like Cameron Poe in Con Air. What is happening. I'm pretty sure a doctor of specialist medicine just told me autism is made up and I'm being a silly boy and messing about wasting everyones time. Am I? Am I who's wrong? I'm fully prepared to accept this might be the case and that I've been caught up in some mass hysteria and it's just my natural rhythms and how I communicate that has made me *appear* to be ND when in fact I'm not and it's just some Venn overlap that's been misdiagnosed. Maybe all those people were so keen to diagnose another one that I got caught up with it all and thought..... yeah, actually maybe I *am*. But actually I'm not. It's very confusing. I'm being a bit glib but there's a bit of me that doesn't *not* think that a little. Most unpleasant. 2 stars.
@TheBreadmonkey That argument makes my blood boil:
"But I sometimes forget things too, I think we're all a bit 'ADHD', aren't we?"
"Oh God! It's so embarrassing, isn't it? How long did you practice without medical indemnity insurance for?"
"Sorry, what do you mean?"
"Well I've gone for months without home insurance and at one point car insurance, hahaha, imagine that, and if you're a doctor, there's medical indemnity, and GMC fees - you are insured now, aren't you?"
"I beg your pardon, I have never practiced without insurance!"
"So what exactly do you think 'a bit ADHD' is, then [you unmitigated spanner]?"

"Sinners Is Not a Vampire Movie"
"The film’s time structure, folding forward sixty years and back again, reinforces this. Ancestral time does not move in a straight line. The dead are present. The future bleeds into the room. As a viewer and artist who has felt this bleed of time and space in work that draws on ancestors, this moment resembled a tesseract for me."
