"I’m a brick. I’m made of earth. I’m heavy, rarely decorated, strong, and useful.
You can build a wall with bricks and protect everything that you love. You can build a house with bricks and withstand centuries of abuse from wind and rain. Modern LGBT pride started when police raided the Stonewall Inn in New York City and (the details are likely apocryphal here) a trans woman threw the first brick at the cops.
The two most commonly nominated contenders for “threw the first brick” are Marsha P. Johnson, a Black woman, and Sylvia Rivera, who was Puerto Rican. I don’t want to go back in time and apply our modern versions of slang to them. I don’t want to classify them one way or the other. But modern pride began when someone threw a brick at the cops. How could I possibly take “brick” as an insult?"
@igd_news I was in NYC for the 20th anniversary of Stonewall back in 1989. On the evening of June 28, we threw symbolic foam rubber yellow "bricks" (as in Yelow Brick Road) before marching right at the cops, seizing their sawhorse barricades as they retreated, and taking to the streets. We chanted "arrest us! Just try it! Stonewall was a riot!"
The cops ran and we were in control. At one point, a car full of homophobes rammed us in both forward and reverse, and several of ours had to go to the hospital. We chased that car for many blocks, at one point they almost got away but we cut the corner and caught up. When they got stuck in traffic, we used those sawhorses as battering rams and smashed that car up right good.

@mastodonmigration Thanks 😉 I love it here! It's already been an infinitely more positive experience than I've had on any social media anything, and I've been around since the Xanga & MySpace days 🤣😂 #millenial
