Great news!
For the first time, Ukraine succeeds in documenting the war crimes of a Russian soldier and securing a conviction: Sergei Karpilovych sentenced to 12 years in prison for keeping a civilian woman prisoner and raping her over a two months period.
May it be the first successful trial of many thousands.
Dudes after a lifetime of wanting one, a Compact OED popped up at a reasonable-ish price, and I pounced on it. (The Compact, as you can maybe see, is a single-volume, micrographic presentation of *the entire twenty-volume Oxford English Dictionary*, 2nd Edition.) I’m over the moon.
Oddly, this immediately feels like the most Lifehouse-ish thing within my grasp, moreso than the solar generator or first-aid supplies or stock of bottled water: a quiet gesture toward the continuity of knowledge, if not yet a defense of its conditions of possibility. I find it deeply moving.

Update on copy/paste being broken on GIMP/Inkscape on macOS (and as it turns out, TIFF loading is also broken on Windows): They won't fix it, because their image loader is legacy on macOS and Windows, but also there are no plans to bring the non-legacy image loader to those platforms.

I guess GTK is now deprecated and unmaintained on anything that isn't Linux, and with it every app that uses GTK.
@lina even as a Linux users try to steer away from GTK apps where possible due to many of them not integrating well if you don't use Gnome, and doesn't look like that will change anytime soon

The one fairly popular app that I know of which was stuck on GTK2 was Ardour. These days they have forked it into an internal vendored version called ydk (so they can maintain it).

@davidgerard @cstross I'm not even 100% sure on that. There's a short-term and a long-term argument. On the short term, nuclear (neither conventional nor SMR) will not be ready to affect anything. On the long term, *any* form of fusion -or- fission reaction adds heat to the earth system. And has the fuel problem.
So, if you're building small: Why bother, solar would have you covered in the same time five times over.
If you're building big: you're warming the planet and need fuel from somewhere.
@henryk @davidgerard I disagree somewhat: fission fuel is a non-issue—reprocessing gets us 50x the energy output from our current fuel stock, you can extract uranium from seawater for not much more effort than mining it on land, and if you add thorium reserves we've got enough fission fuel to power 100% of our current civilizational needs until the sun enters its red giant phase (i.e. > 4 billion years).
And on that scale, heating isn't much of a problem either.
