What also seems to have changed in #iOS26: switching tabs in #Safari by swiping up from the address bar now often sends me straight to the Home Screen instead of the tab overview. Either I suddenly lost motor control, or #Apple quietly changed the gesture tolerance. This never happened in previous #iOS versions. #LiquidGlass #LiquidAss
During all this #LiquidGlass frenzy, #Apple somehow forgot to port the feature where tapping the top bar in #Safari’s in-app browser scrolls to the top. Progress! 🙃
@jensimmons question.. why is the shorthand for text-decoration still not supported ? It's been in prefixed preview for 3.5 years now. Did people forget about it ?

Would be nice to see Safari catch up with the other browser vendors.
I’m surprised I haven’t heard more responses from web developers about the change to Safari on iOS and iPadOS regarding web apps. Now every website can be a web app (saved to the Home Screen and opened as a stand-alone app) — not just sites that have been configured a certain way by the developers.
It’s a big difference for users. Every site gets the same experience. No more mysterious sometimes-it-works-one-way, sometimes-another.
@jensimmons Not a web developer but, is #Safari doing anything better than what I did with a #shortcut in a summer afternoon two years ago?
https://routinehub.co/shortcut/16316/
I tested Safari’s new feature a bit and I still can’t change the icon, or set the scope (not all #webapps are at the root of a domain!). Do splash screens still need to be the device’s retina resolution? Are they still stretched in landscape iPads? 😬
@willcroft @jensimmons @nicolas17 I’ve added reproduction steps to FB20414621.
I can 100% reliably cause Safari 26.0.1 on macOS 15.7 to slow down and eventually close by repeatedly typing and backspacing in the address bar.
Even once I stop typing and it eventually goes back to 0% CPU, the whole browser is then sluggish when doing things like clicking into the address bar or maximising the window. Continuing to type/backspace causes it to lock up and close.
@willcroft @jensimmons I ended up submitting this as FB20414621 because it seems to be getting worse. Today Safari 26 even crashed after beachballing for a long time while trying to type in the address bar.
The bad performance seems to get worse in relation to how long Safari has been open or how much browsing has been done, so initially everything seems fine, but after a few hours it sometimes takes seconds to respond (on an M4 Pro!).
Safari 26 is here!!! Anchor Positioning, Scroll-driven animations, High Dynamic Range images, the new HTML element, the all-new Digital Credentials API, SVG icon support, WebGPU, WebKit in SwiftUI, every site can be a web app on iOS and iPadOS, and much more.

@jensimmons "there are now zero requirements for “installability” in Safari" - this is false statement. Still adding a web app to Home Screen on #iOS requires multiple clicks in menus and isn't intuitive. This is discriminating.
"Browser support started in November 2014, and Safari adopted in March 2018" - this summarizes how #Safari has long been lagging behind in supporting new features, e.g. #WebGPU has been supported in #Blink & #Gecko since 2023 and only now it's added to @webkit. So late!
Hmm - installed the Safari update that was in the settings app on my MacOS 15.7 MacBook Pro and now I can’t close tabs by clicking the X on them, nor click and alter the path. I can use Command-W to close just fine.
Odd...

Does anyone have an example (blog post?) of how to use #Apple#Safari#contentFilters to block search ad clicks?
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/networkextension/content-filter-providers
(I'm able to block them using enterprise config files in Firefox and Chrome, but I don't have a link to do it in Safari https://blog.zgp.org/search-malvertising-protection-using-enterprise-policies/ )

Does #Safari's marketing people really have what's best for developers in their minds when they take informal polls? 🤔
I've been using #Firefox for over 10 years. Only recently have I switched away from it as my primary browser, because frankly I don't think it has much life left (and my customers use
#Safari or #Chrome).

I just realized that today is the 24th anniversary of when I started the #Safari and #WebKit projects at #Apple. 🤦♀️ Which just goes to show how much my life has moved on and changed since leaving the Fruit Company over a dozen years ago. 🤷♀️
Dog almighty, I am old AF. But let's keep that fact between ourselves, OK? 😂
It's also @kocienda's birthday. Which is why I remembered this at all. Happy birthday, Ken! 💖
