Tonight's Low Quality Ad is for this "Waiting For Societal Collapse" Patch. Well, the good news is you won't have to wait long. The bad news is also that you won't have to wait long.

@alfredbaudisch You're a machine!
@PixelProphecy back pain gone unleashed potential that I was accumulating while I had extreme pain. I have to do everything I want while I still don't feel pain 😁
That also was a weird one.

Club.

I find inspiration in this small rhyme from Danish author Piet Hein:
"Den, som kun tar spøg for spøg og alvor kun alvorligt, han og hun har faktisk fattet begge dele dårligt."
It means:
Those who only take a joke as a joke and seriousness only serious, he and she has actually understood both of these poorly.
@randahl I do like his grooks. And admire his design / math skills.
Brey, you don't know. You don't know anything. You don't know what tomorrow is gonna bring. Do you think Vladdy Lenin might know a thing or two about revolution? Yeah, mere weeks before the Russian Revolution, he told a group of dissidents in Germany the revolution wouldn't come till their grandkids were the ones fighting it.
You don't know. Nothing is impossible. But it doesn't happen on its own.
Literally every person in history who ever fought back against an authoritarian state had the same doubts, fears, and lack of confidence you do. We don't DO THIS because it's easy, or it's fun. We, people, the peasantry do this when we have no recourse through the system. You are not alone, even if it feels like you are. There is a history here that demonstrates we not only can, but MUST win. Or teach your kids to goosestep. Because they'll live in the shadow of your shame.
apropos of unfortunate discourse yesterday: is there *any* current podcast where senior programmers with vaguely progressive politics talk about programming and doing interesting things with software? am I the only person who is an audience for this?
Sup!
Former sysadmin for Podomatic here.
(trivia: Podomatic was hosting podcasts, before iTunes had podcast support).
I have no idea. Presumably, you are not the only audience for such things.
I never bothered to make podcasts myself; I was too busy running infrastructure hosting such things for others.
Moreover, even before I was a sysadmin at Podomatic? I thought real time streaming p2p was more fascinating; and AFAIK? PeerTube (@peertube@framapiaf.org) seems to have implemented that on a level that me and my predecessors only dreamed of being possible circa 2007 or whenever it was that my past employer (not Podomatic, though where I started coworking with Podomatic's founder) was hoping to get from the likes of BitTorrent (Inc. back when they had a realtime streaming p2p implementation they were teasing, yet never released in a way that we could meaningfully utilize).
IMHO, the actual interesting things with software have been and still are, largely found within the demo scene; for many decades now.
Outside of the demo scene? If you get a chance, check out DynamicLand (I visited their previous location in Oakland. I have not yet checked out their iteration in Berkeley, https://dynamicland.org/ has a video which is sort of an overview, yet it is the sort of thing which is ideally experienced in person; not intermediated via the distance of remote networked computing).
Many other things? To me at least: are not particularly interesting, or worse: "reinventing the flat tire" as Alan Kay would phrase it.
There are creative individuals, sometimes we/they coalesce into collaborative projects! Burning Man is happening soonish; though at least personally? I haven't visited that since 2012 and the last interactive grid sequencer/fire art project Syzygryd has been to some other festivals since then, yet I haven't personally so much as seen nor spoken with a lot of those collaborators in years.
Author & Punisher is going on tour soon. He builds his own instruments, and open sources their designs. I don't think anyone has re-created his instruments yet? Though IMHO, he's worth checking out live. Here is a recent video which kind of has an overview of Tristan Shone's intentions behind his instrument creations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ0VDkEmGGU (they are, essentially, glorified MIDI controllers I guess, for lack of a better description).
At least from my vantage, the artists have always been those who have done the most interesting things with software (and hardware) and lamentably, we lose sight (or hearing) a lot of that with overwhelming hyper-fixations on those seeking instead to capitalize on software and tech. ;-(

To get a sense of what Public Interest cover when they're not interviewing party leaders, here's an interview with Mark Wilson, the local secretary of the Rail and Maritime Transport Union for the Lyttleton port;
https://www.publicinterest.nz/is-this-privatisation-by-another-name/
The main focus of the interview is a proposal to lease the port's operations to a consortium including DP World. A company owned by the state of Dubai, with a very shady international reputation.

@codinghorror Even the house Atredies wasn’t fully protected by the family atomics, showing why my theory of limited power for god-emperors is so important.

@nemo sorry, I should have made it clear this is a shitpost. To be fair I thought the whole "America over America in America next to America" thing was sufficient for that…
