When I was a student, we were taught that only about 10% of programmers worked at software companies, the rest were writing in-house software that was never distributed. I saw a lot of terrifying things people in that space did (VB Win16 apps talking to a single Access database over ODBC to manage inventory, running on Windows 😜 but still Win16 because they wrote it for VB4 and lost the source code, that kind of thing).
Is it still true? There’s been a general trend to outsourcing IT and using COTS solutions instead of bespoke. Does anyone know what the ratio is now?
@david_chisnall Also terrifying is spreadsheets "written" by people like accountants rather than professional software engineers. Like, even if it works, which version on which laptop is the "real" version which should be relied on for tracking a multi-million budget?

@fj imagine if Brexit hadn't happened... we'd be crushing this chart
@_elena Wait until Ukraine and Canada join 😊 and our British friends accept to rejoin and abandon their “a-la-carte” approach to the EU
Thanks, it’s so great to see you again too, and I’m sure if you keep talking long enough I’ll be able to piece together who you are!
@TheBreadmonkey Every single human society we know about practised magic. We don't keep doing things if they aren't useful in some way.
There's a religious studies joke that goes, What's the difference between magic and religion? Religion is what we do, while magic is what they do.
“People tell chatbots about their medical fears, their relationship problems, their beliefs about God and the afterlife.
Advertising built on that archive creates a potential for manipulating users in ways we don’t have the tools to understand, let alone prevent.”

@Em0nM4stodon We HAVE a brain. It understands very well. It doesn't have to know all the specific ways it manipulates, just extrapolate from algorithmic (?) manipulation.
Advice if you build websites: Use the W3C HTML *and* CSS validator. Not because I want to tell you that "you're bad if your HTML isn't valid", but because it'll help you find trivial bugs that can make your life hard.
Especially also use the CSS validator. I found 3 issues that made things not work as they should in recent days. I had a bug where it took me a while to figure out why it didn't work til I found some stackoverflow post, and the css validator would've told me right away.

LOL, at some point I had an Amazon Prime membership (because I wanted to watch certain shows and they were only on Prime Video).
I just got a physical letter from Amazon telling me that the US government decided that I was missold Prime as I only used certain benefits and that the FTC requires them to pay me compensation.
How much? $14.99. The letter came with a cheque. There is no possible way to cash that in Norway. Oh and they spelt my name wrong anyway because they cannot do Unicode.
@ruari One just can't make this fecal matter up .....
Might be a result of an Artificial Idiot taking the case? ;)
@bootlegrydia i can see how the announcement alone serves the purpose of quelling speech/dissent
@bootlegrydia naming it a "festival" is so strange to me but also not exactly
@florent_mignot Merci !
@sebsauvage mais c'est du plastique ☹️

Also I have no idea if posting these details allows someone somewhere to claim this money in some convoluted way but if so you are welcome to it. 😜
I should also add that the accopmpanying letter only gives me until the 21st to cash it.

Not saying I think society is regressing somewhat, but this is a news article today from prominent Technology news outlet, The Verge 👍

@signalapp
Why do I need to register or link a phone number to a supposedly anonymous messenger for it to work?
With Threema, this works without having to provide a phone number or email address.
So why should I still use Signal? What advantage would it give me?
