@davidgerard @david_chisnall my point is, a lot of people are acting as if it is super clear which people are ok and which people to steer clear of, and for me it's really hard to differentiate where I could assume the line lies. E.g. Reiser (the FS guy) essentially got cancelled because he murdered his wife. This was the right thing to do in my opinion, but I remember an argument to differntiate the human from the technology, so there is definitely a tension field here.

In 1943 UK killed ~40000 out of 1.7M Hamburg residents in a few days. It was a war crime at worst, if not simply an adequate response. At that point the only thing that prevented the same fate for British cities was Royal Airforce

In years of current war in Gaza the death toll is only around twice that of a few days over Hamburg. The rest is history

If only we could see the rival communist and capitalist systems objectively, rather than through one or the other distorting lens.

Many times, working in Eastern European countries, including Russia, in the 90s and 00s, I would hear people complain about soviet life - but immediately follow that up with 'but at least you knew your children would be well educated, treated if they were ill, get a job and a home, however humble, when they left you...'

I remember a big group of easterners and westerners talking about television. Somebody from Albania reminisced how in the communist period they had only one channel, and most of an evening might be taken up by a broadcast of a classical music concert. Everybody laughed at the deprivation - then somebody said 'but you know we were all together - the next day you would talk and joke with all your friends about the programmes you had all seen... there was more of a community feeling'.

And I remember most clearly the verdict of a Berlin taxi-driver: "Yeah, communism was shit. Capitalism - more shit."

Made it into central Paris, possibly to the right station for the train to Bordeaux. But it’s too early for the train to be listed in the boards, and there is not one single person who looks like they could confirm my eticket.

Decided to buy a cheese baguette and stop worrying about life.

Vidéo intéressante sur les « trottoirs en bateaux ». Cet aménagement très répandu consiste à créer un dénivelé du trottoir devant chaque sortie de garage pour y faciliter l’entrée et la sortie d’une voiture. Mais cela crée un effet « montagnes russes » pour les piétons. Cela rend la mobilité difficile à pied pour les personnes avec poussettes, les personnes âgées, les PMR, etc.
Résultat : on gêne des nombreux piétons toute la journée pour le passage d’une voiture 2 fois par jour la plupart du temps.
La solution pratiquée ailleurs : faire un biseau en bordure de trottoir. Cela laisse le trottoir plat et permet le passage d’une voiture.

It's been interesting to watch everyone discover that constantly having to review code that you (or your coworkers) didn't write sucks actually. I experienced this when I worked as an expert witness a few decades back--although that did have the extra stress of having to explain said code under oath to a room of lawyers and an opposing expert. It occurs to me that this format of code review would make for an excellent "final exam" in a programming course.
