Actual thing which I try to do: don't repeat ideas, say someone's name and ask them to repeat/expand. I tend to understand and digest things by rephrasing, so I have to remember to dial that back and take a breath.

Funk is coming back. I repeat The Funk is Returning.
I didn't really notice it, just seemed like a musical style or a reference, but so many songs have that funky sound now, and every little band has some guy with the saxophone or other brass instrument instead of just electric guitars.
The thing about a funk band is there is *no upper limit* to the number of brass players you can add. The bands of the 70s just kept expanding in size until they were orchestras.
Will it happen again?

@afewbugs my friend and I rate campsites by how many hooks they have in showers. Such a little thing but it makes all the difference to the experience.
My new favourite "the people who run this truly understand" thing is shelves/shower caddies at drinking water taps for people who fill up individual bottles rather than tanks. I hate having to juggle bottles or put them on the floor.

@juliette I was backpacking through England once & stayed at a hostel in the Lake District, a slightly out-of-the-way place I had to walk a fair ways up tree-lined hill roads to get to. I’d arrived mid-day, during a several-hour break when the doors were closed, so I had to hang out on the front porch and wait. The place had large gardens around it, and little rabbits scampering about, and I just relaxed, had snacks, read a Wheel of Time paperback, and marveled at how perfect it was.
I guess it's actually clarified in the Mastodon quote posts documentation that they can't enforce it for other implementations:
All of this makes me wonder why such an unwieldy mechanism has been concocted in the first place if it's just as much of a security theater as not having in the first place. 
@mariusor I mean it works if you have implementations respecting it, and you can always defederate if you disagree with server policies.
I agree that the mechanism is unwieldy though and takes a lot of code to implement

I don't know if there’s a way to make our voices audible to Apple on this, but if there is, it’s worth pushing that. This isn’t just a silly whim or a symbolic fight. It’s about power. It’s about consolidation of power. It’s about a would-be autocrat testing the boundaries of his power, testing whether he can get one of the richest corporations ever to exist to bend to his whims…further, and further, and a little further still….

@inthehands @anildash yet again, I keep waiting for a corporation with the power of Apple to declare itself a sovereign nation state. That's basically what has to happen.
@30yrdscreamer I don't know others, and I don't have it in me to tell other fellow Reds what to feel. I can only say that I always expect the absolute worst of FSG and their kind, and because of that, the fact that they seem unlikely to send Trey or Gakpo away feels like a little win to me personally.

I really feel like we had several prominent FOSS organizations fail us by not saying "hey hold on, don't use generative AI in FOSS projects, we're not sure what the legal, community, environmental implications of this are but there are serious problems and we have a history of taking a stand" and I worry that maybe we lost our moment to be principled, except in niche spaces, and the walls are closing in
And... I'm really sad about it. I think we're underestimating the amount of damage that's happening. :\
@cwebber We may also be underestimating the number of people in FOSS who didn't even know where it was coming from. Later they will ask what to (quickly) do now. People like B.gates are getting ready to say: See? I told you so.
AI is not real, but the damage is.
