Listen, I just think it's weird that the same people who are saying they're worried that AI is going to wipe out humanity are also eager for military contracts that will give AI control of weapons.
@legoktm I tried it on a chromebook for real work, and it was basically LibreOffice! But the crippling misfeature was it was *laggy*. Response was slow and would occasionally pause completely. Did you find that?
@legoktm the chromebook was tiny (low-end AMD processor, 4GB RAM) but I wrote Libra Shrugged in LibreOffice on a netbook of similar spec and it's fast as hell.
* I got used to Fedora 44's disabling of middle-click paste but Collabora still has it, which is getting frustrating because I mis-click pretty frequently
* Why is there a little navigation icon in the left margin partially overlapping the document? I promise I can open the "Navigation" pane really easily with ctrl+f and don't need a constant, floating reminder

Drug addiction and misuse is a health crisis. We need a major expansion of harm reduction and treatment services, including safe consumption facilities.

I feel like we've collectively forgotten how much safer food and cars and basically everything else gets, and how fast that happens, as soon as there's real liability involved.
Because strict liability is how you align the incentives of corporate behaviour with the general public good, and aligned incentives are magic.

One vendor I talked to had only made about 400 dollars so far. This is day two of the show, at about 1pm.
at that point, I would expect to be at least 2500 dollars in, if the show was going to be successful (but my expectation's are perhaps inflated by vending mostly through 2020s shows.)
The bulk of the usual vendors and customers were not present.
They also, it appears, advertised the show heavily with "AI" "artwork"
So I guess that's the end of the line.

It was and is one of the hardest things in life for me to learn. To not care so much about "things as they should be" as imposed by others.
Taking a moment to just exist is genuinely a treat (provided you can get your inner voice to lay off for a bit) Having a sky like that helps.
Hope you enjoyed it - and continue to wonder in amazement at the things of nature and beings in our world :)
@Aprazeth not caring about the way things "should" be is one of the hardest lessons and one I have to keep relearning, but definitely worth persevering with!

@dominykas @gooba42 That’s just not how computers work. They execute instructions, which are encoded in software. The software might be hand assembled, generated by a complier, or synthesized from a machine learning system, but however the final executed instructions came about, a programmer (or a coven of programmers) was involved.
These AI systems didn’t crawl out of the ocean on their own. Someone built them, and their behavior reflects human decisions (or negligence).
@mattblaze @gooba42 I agree with you 🤷♂️ I also think we'll need a new word to replace "programmed", to include the nuance. "Vibed" is not that word, I hope 😁
But either way, it does not look like OpenAI thinks the same way as you do, nor does it look like law enforcement thinks that way (unless I missed some news). I hope that changes soon.
