Idk, maybe lots of former contributers are taking their ball and going home when those projects say "no ai." But I haven't seen any projects fold or lament the loss of supporters after instituting a hard and fast "no ai" policy. And I HAVE seen plenty of projects and orgs nearly grinding to a halt under a deluge of slop submissions.

My point being: Your policy can be just "NO." That seems to be the most workable policy.

We just had yet another case of an AI agent hacking a web app. My take: how about we stop antropomorphizing them and treat like any other machine? If I left a garden pump running unattended and it flooded a neighbour's garden, I'd be liable. I don't see how allowing an LLM to run code without proper guardrails and sandboxing is any different. It's not a "rogue agent", it's a technology that's semi-reliable by design.

Robert Morris went to jail for the Morris worm. If someone's LLM does felony hacking, the humans responsible for it should go to jail too.

encrypted-at-rest storage? not usually

private messages that admins can't read? nope

end-to-end encryption? nah

assurance that messages are from who they say they are from? perhaps

secure that pathological JSON payloads won't screw up arbitrary clients? unlikely

secure against (D)DOS attacks? unlikely

is the Mastodon-proper™ sprawl of codebase well-audited? I have my doubts

GoToSocial, Snac2, etc? They tend to be smaller with fewer moving parts, so I have a bit more faith/trust in their integrity.

A while ago I asked people here whether they use Lemmy or Reddit. The results got me thinking: even among people who already use and like the Fediverse, Lemmy seems to be surprisingly small.
