The $700k/yr-paid editor of academic labour exploitation magazine Science writing an article complaining about how AI is exploiting academic labour and making publishers lives more difficult, and then getting caught using ChatGPT to write the article, feels like the perfect end to this academic year.
Claim of the moment: "No human relative or partner can accompany us through our entire lives. Only our bionic robots can share such an intimate bond, staying by our side from birth until death and offering us unconditional love and trust." https://x.com/AJEnglish/status/2076928431699144982
@MikeElgan Isn't that the plot to Bicentennial Man?

In light of that, though I'm heartened to see the author of this editorial come down on "AI" as a negative impact on science and scientific publishing, there are much stronger positions that could be taken, and I think writing habits that name specific technology and avoid anthropomorphizing (including accountability-displacing) language help people get there.

I'm replying to the thread end because that's how I understood its beginning:
> If you reply to this one directly, you are probably effectively interrupting/talking over me.
that's some food for thought I had not considered before - I tend to reply mid thread to specific points made in that particular post. Would you say that's always rude, or can it be ok by e.g. stating "I have read the whole thread but want to address this in particular"?
I used to mention this more when my kid was small and the social internet was different but man, having a kid continues to be the absolute greatest in ways I never expected, and our kid and her friends just keep getting cooler and funnier, I love them.
A general rule of thumb from scientific paper I read somewhere when I was building my gray water system: shower water has 1/10 the e coli of laundry water, which has 1/10 the e coli of water from flushing the toilet
I've not had a problem with soap in 20 years of using gray water, but I do use natural soaps. Dr bronner's for washing my hands, for example
Other people have said no problem from commercial laundry detergent, but I haven't tried
I would suggest piping your laundry, kitchen sink, or bath water out to the garden. It's a lot more water than washing your hands in the bathroom
I do not use any of this on strawberries, or lettuce, or other things that grow low to the ground that I eat raw
Things with smooth surfaces, easy to wash, that I eat cooked, like zucchini, no problem! And of course fruit trees, and ornamentals
@NilaJones @idlestate I only have a balcony garden with a few tubs, so I don't need a lot of water. Something around the 10-15l each watering.
If I tell you the pin for the toilets at the #fsfe25 social event place consists of 4 numbers, what would be your guess? 😉

🚨BREAKING: A horrific Israeli massacre has killed at least 7 Palestinians and wounded more than 20, many critically after Israeli forces struck civilians during a funeral procession in Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza Strip.
Hiya, @toddrichman. Disheartening to think that you and those of your ilk feel free to accuse journalists (granted, you wouldn't recognize one if she bit you on the nose) of justifying terrorism. You are nothing but a lazy liar. @ryangrim and @jeremyscahill have been hard at work

@otfrom i think i'm going to wait until he actually does announce it, rather than believe the BBC. (i note that the Guardian are reporting the BBC as their source.)
i'm not saying it's wrong. i'm just not going to start swearing until he says it himself.
@fishidwardrobe fair enough.
I don't think it is opposition disinfo. I think it is a trial balloon if anything

@ori_goldberg @toddrichman @ryangrim @jeremyscahill “Pro-Israel Democrat”. When someone labels themselves pro-genocide, what else do you need to know about them?
yeah, because the media distorted/latched onto Taco Bell and tarred them when it seems like they were actually being a responsible actor and taking a hit by acting voluntarily and speaking publicly. it does seem to have been lettuce sourced in mexico (by a US-owned conglomerate), but Taco Bell is unfairly blamed
#HolosSocial 1.15.0 is available.
This release brings moderation tools for the relay staff, and an account standing page where everyone can see if they have strikes from a relay, with the possibility to appeal. A post preview is now shown in grouped notifications.
It also brings several fixes, including boosts not reaching all followers servers, blocked accounts in hashtag tracking, and a stuck sync notification draining the battery.

@idlestate yeah. I'm talking about the liquid goo I pump on my hands then add water to to make my hand clean...

Listening to the Magic Tuber String Band . @shuttermonster says “Appalachian traditional with a side John Cage”. Yep, that sounds about right. Very nice.
Some sad, rough stories in the music, even with few lyrics. Sounds from life near former coal-town and nuclear plant wastelands in North Carolina. Also sounds of how life does still go on in such places . #hillsidemusicfestival #hillside

Water saving question. Am pondering the use of some grey water to water plants. Are there any soaps that are effective at washing ones hands/body that would also be safe to pour on plants like strawberries.
Merely empirical, campers I know have been using Sal suds (liquid, Dr Bronners) for ages because it seems to not change the dishwashing site, etc.
I’m seconding the worry about handwashing water tho. Especially into containers; I can’t imagine that a balcony container can handle as much microbial introduction as soil in place.
Not to say, never use the handwashing water, just, have a think each time about how grey it is.
