Speech-to-text has many positive applications, but in an age of surveillance capitalism I am most worried about a multitude of apps that have access to the microphone, to be silently listening and sending streams of encrypted plain text conversation transcripts to home base.

@smallcircles Yes, that worry is understandable.
However, I'd be much more worried about the phone in your pocket or behavior-mining when surfing the web.
Metadata is the actual oil of surveillance capitalism!
Also, as long as a Speech-To-Text system is open source it can be audited, so in this specific case, I wouldn't worry too much.

When I were a lad, there weren't any training in assembly language.
I taught myself machine code from the Zilog manuals.
You tell the kids of today that...
[Monty Python, Four Yorkshiremen sketch.]
@Walrus Perhaps there was a window of time back then when basic (no pun intended) Assembly training was offered at higher education institutions.

I think this would be a useful approach.
There are a lot of people in the retrocomputing community which are fluent in assembly (and much lower "decks" 😄 of the systems, which recreate old systems/processors on FPGAs or rebuild CPUs with discrete elements for fun. You can do such things only with a deeper knowledge how the hardware is working.
But the number of very young people is somewhat limited.
@echopapa Right, many retrocomputing enthusiasts work on similarly complex projects if not more.

@neil I'm curious about the "knife" accepted from "unrecorded" provider to "avoid causing embarrassment".
(Didn't expect a spreadsheet when I clicked btw, might want to add a heads-up.)

There's a weird incentive in the Fediverse where there are a bunch of people I don't follow because they post 90% things I'm interested in, and other people I follow boost those posts, so I see the interesting posts multiple times without following them. Occasionally I follow them and then realise I'm just getting more copies of the same posts and unfollow them again. Which doesn't mean I'm not interested in them, it just means following them doesn't actually show me more of their posts.
@david_chisnall I found the feature 'hide boosts' on Mastodon super useful for this for people I follow who boost a lot, but I really only care about their updates. I don't know if you use that at all?
Except what I think what we really want is a "hide boosts of mutual follows" setting.

@agowa338 Got it, thanks.

This, from my files. I don't remember what it is from.
