Any of you mid- to late-career folks out there ever done a sabbatical? Nothing sounds as appealing right now as spending six months reading books, writing a bit, and thinking. Or maybe just six weeks, I'm not greedy. I just want to be gone long enough to declare email bankruptcy when I get back and start from zero.
if you've taken extended time off mid-career (esp. if you're in tech), and would be willing to talk about it, lmk.
There's a party game called (among other things) "raconteur" where each person adds one sentence to a story in turn. I wonder about doing the software equivalent as an Advent of Code ish thing: line up a couple of dozen volunteers, and each day, one of them inherits the code to date and has to add a feature of their choosing before passing it on.
"We have enough art now, we will never need any more" said no society ever.
@fullywoolly fabulous! I hope you enjoy the book!
The coverstitch doesn’t trim - it topstitches. You can mimic it with a twin needle which is much cheaper, but has its own perils (you’ve got to buy twin needles for each fabric type, and reeeeeally loosen the bobbin tension when you use them so it’s a bit of a pain to keep switching back & forth)
@fehrtrade oh interesting. I just lost power so can't take a picture but the T-shirt I'm wearing was clearly cut right next to the coverstitch. Maybe a special industrial machine?
Thanks for the tip about the bobbin tension!

@randahl
That commentary should be a 60 Minutes news segment.
Very well done Randahl !
@ChrisHolladay Thank you Chris. 🙏🏼

so i refuse to call it a "hash". it's a "checksum" at best
i fervently believe that describing an actual literal parse forest for the file content that comes from actually parsing the data in an application-specific context is the correct way to achieve both data compression as well as integrity.
if the value of a single bit modifies the semantics of the entire rest of the file, that's information you kinda do need to know!
But again, I'm being hyperbolic when I say "they are ALREADY the Nazis,. we are just at the part where they haven't announce the "final solution" out loud yet." Right?
The amazing thing about studying the entire history of the literal fucking Holocaust because "someone has to KNOW this shit" is the way people who have not done so will glibly and confidently tell you that everything is fine because they feel a way, even as you are watching the process of the Holocaust replicated step by step in real time.
We are at "it's fine if one of them dies every six days - you barely even notice." Zyklon B is about a half decade away, tops.

#Fedilab, all other apps and my dev account are officially off Google. I submitted the form and unpublished everything.
@apps
That's good.
I recommend publishing step-by-step instructions to switch from the Google version to your F-Droid repo as soon as possible.
#NewMexico has its own state law against federal agents at the polls. Markwayne better keep ICE away from our elections. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/sep/01/trump-homeland-security-markwayne-mullin-polling 1/ #nmLovesDemocracy
@heidilifeldman #uspol Even if people are and can prove they are US citizens, ICE can still detain them long enough to prevent them from voting. 😡
@bss saying that a far right party that is currently disappearing people, supporting a genocide, attacking our neighbors, expanding surveillance, and a litany of other things is going to make better choices for "little guys" whether people or small businesses is not neutral and is vocal support of fascism. threatening and extorting allegiance from big tech is just that and nothing else.
It's one tweet in support of an appointment of an antitrust lawyer made by Trump, a tweet made in 2024 (before Trump started his second term) and far cry from the level of support and booklicking being carried out by the likes of Apple, Google, Meta, etc all of them continuing support long after Trump's 2nd term started.
Is it gross? Yes. Do I like it? No. Is it a statement of support of fascism. I don't think so. And yeah, I think it's way overblown and an exaggeration to call Proton supporters of fascism.
But, also...
- Is there any other company that provides the same privacy focused services as Proton that has a better record?
- Has the Proton CEO continued with repeated vocal support of Trump's fascism.
I felt so energetic this morning, then 2 of our students got into a fight at like 12:15 and between that and another heat wave I am currently exhausted. Hopefully will pass out as soon as I get into bed
@katrani good luck on not dying 👍
"The ACLU now estimates someone is dying in immigration detention roughly every six days, and a CNN investigation a few weeks ago found that at least a dozen of those deaths were directly attributable to medical neglect, understaffing, and the cascading failures that happen when for-profit concentration camp operations double the detained population without doubling the doctors."

@jardo Ron Jeffries? He’s coding a small game and sharing his design process an thinking on his blog https://ronjeffries.com/articles/-v026/p/n/.
I’d like to hear where he thinks our industry is going, and whether we’ll be designing software in X years as he’s doing on his blog, and if not whether something similar will emerge or we’ll simply be governed by the machines.
Bonus: he’s on Mastodon.
