@mariapopova The Year of Magical Thinking is such a great and full book. It's like this article on the scale of a whole novel.

Passwords are one of the only things that I won’t self-host tbh. With strong MFA and security hygiene, the likelihood of me fucking something up in my homelab is higher much than Bitwarden getting hacked.
I totally understand why people self-host it though. More power to you!
@phillip agreed. I’m open to options, but it’s less likely that I’ll be able to trust myself with that task.
I really feel like we had several prominent FOSS organizations fail us by not saying "hey hold on, don't use generative AI in FOSS projects, we're not sure what the legal, community, environmental implications of this are but there are serious problems and we have a history of taking a stand" and I worry that maybe we lost our moment to be principled, except in niche spaces, and the walls are closing in
And... I'm really sad about it. I think we're underestimating the amount of damage that's happening. :\
Gaussian Splatting is a recent technique for taking a bunch of geolocated photos of a location & converting them into a digital 3D scene! Represented as splotches of virtual paint in 3D space.
Could potentially be very useful...
It works by repeatedly repositioning & recolouring these splats until they match your photos, taking advantage of how efficient it is to render these splats. Once trained it renders in real-time, & training is reasonably fast too.

@1password is funding known racist and all around asshole #DHH's insecure #Linux distro #Omarchy? WTF is this about? I've been a #1Password customer for many years but it's not possible to recommend after this. How about you claw this money back right now and never touch any of his projects again with a ten foot pole? 😡

I feel so much better when I'm actually building things!
It gives me something to talk about other than how computing's going to shit. I have the chance about how I'm doing my small part in making it better! And all the steps I'm taking.
I am motivated by ambitious goals, but all that really matters to me is that I'm programming! That I'm engaging with my craft.
Do you want to tinker with a Redbox machine? We are imminently moving and need three of them to not be in our garage because we won't have room for all of them.
They're free.
You'll need a truck.
Please come adopt one.
Must go by September 13th. Any units not claimed will be recycled.

wife went to the pharmacy to get me some pseudoephedrine, but the chemist remembered that she’s my wife and knows the medicine I’m taking and said not to use it - recommended something else instead and saved me a bit of grief, thanks for giving a shit local pharmacist!
The Senate votes September 15 on whether to take up the CLARITY Act, the crypto market structure bill. The motion needs 60 votes and Republicans hold 53 seats.
Reporting says Senator Gallego was one of seven Democrats who rejected the Republican-drafted version. Indivisible is asking Arizonans to tell him to hold that line and Senator Kelly to join him.
Gallego 202-224-4521. Kelly 202-224-2235.

Super Official Pronouncement
By the power vested in us, the Internet Users of the World, we hereby declare that as of this date forward the name Google has officially been changed to Evil in each and every occurance of the word.
It is no longer allowed to refer to products like Evil Maps, Evil Mail, Evil Docs and Evil Photos using their former names.
Thank you very much for your attention to this matter.
You probably know this has already been done in Mr. Robot, in which E Corp, the largest multinational conglomerate in the world, became Evil Corp for all four seasons of the show due to the story being from Elliott's POV.

Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGS) define a signficantly more-efficient datamodel for processing spatial information!
I'd use this in the feature-phone I'm planning, so I don't need a fancier CPU for a rarely-used feature.
Imagine triangles, hexagons, or squares tessellated across the earth's surface with more of the same nested inside. Give each an ID based on its position in this hierarchy & represent a location as a set of these zone IDs... Then its as cheap to process as any other set!

@strypey @yoasif @davidrevoy if i had to prioritize between whether to decentralise one thing or another, i would have to say the #internetArchive (archive.org) has to take precedence over wikipedia i NEVER use wikipedia they are a political weapon, if it were democratised then googel would simply throw them in the trach heap.
Its the internet archive that is having to suffer with the ridiculous book "borrowing" larp etc. With i2p dying and they associated torrent sharing system dying we need a way to use Tor to share records of public interest and shared culture as a matter of urgency.
for the record i havent used goog search in a decade but i see others using it and they always getmisinformed either by wikipedia or increaing by the poorly quality LLM slop.

Luckily we don't have to pick just one.
> i NEVER use wikipedia they are a political weapon
Thanks for this, I needed a laugh.

Not sure what this has to do with anything.

Pair of African Grey Hornbills. Looked like they were cleaning out last years nest. The female gets "cemented" in! The male brings food until the babies are ready to leave the nest, then he and the female break it open.

@littlemiao
It was! And she clearly didn't want it to end as she meowed in protest when I picked her up to go back inside.
Sketched this cricket in graphite while recovering from surgery, five days in the hospital thinking about the crickets that keep me up at night. Pentel .3 and .5, Blu-Tack for highlights. Glad to be home and glad to hear them again.
