@fkftsh as someone who started transitioning 9 years ago and due to being nonbinary still not passing as my desired perceived gender (male) (i am nonbinary but for cis people its enough to know that i am male actually, for nonbinary people i am genderless /transmasc / genderqueer and other labels that i have collected over years) i do completely agree with that. I *wish* people would actually ask me before asuming me to be (incorrectly) female. I transitioned into masculinity and yet it is never given to me for free. I always have to step in and correct people and afterwards i get gendered correctly. You can't see gender. And some people might be lucky enough to maybe get enough passing bc of time / luck / genetics. But for the rest of us who are trans and who either can't transition, won't transition, have transitioned years ago or can't achieve correct gendering anyway bc of being outside of binary or due to technology not being able to achieve inner gender to outside, begging people to correctly assume ones gender is just shutting out all of us who can't access that correct gendering in the first place. I don't know what to tell people who can't fathom that yes, I have transitioned years ago and I did everything to make myself happy and they still want to give me tips on how to "pass" better so that i may finally be gendered correctly.. why is it always my fault?? Why do I have to put in anymore effort ?? I already did everything in my might. People just can't see me for who I am because they just assume based off of looks. I am tired.

like, the whole discourse about how asking people's pronouns is transphobic? that's 100% binary trans people telling nonbinary & non-passing trans people that they do not have a right to be gendered correctly, solely because having to tell people how they want to be addressed robs them of the dopamine rush of beating misgendering

I’m not nostalgic for computing of the past. The computers I grew up with were fun but they were also bad. A load of things I want to do simply wouldn’t fit in their memory (or on their disks / tapes), would take infeasible amounts of compute time, or both.
But I am somewhat sad that, when those limitations were removed, lack of attention to detail by developers replaced them. Something like the Psion Series 3, Smalltalk on the Alto, or the original Mac were close to the best UIs that it was possible to build in the available hardware.
I don’t want a new machine that’s like the Series 3. It was a great machine for its time, but there are a load of things that I take for granted now that it couldn’t do (for example, the word processor supported styles, but couldn’t render the printer output, and it didn’t support spell checking). What I want is a machine where the same attention to detail was put into the software stack to make everything work smoothly together, to make common operations easy and fast, and to make it possible for end users to extend it in arbitrary ways.

so i did a talk yday on a panel about technofascism at the Anarchist Studies Network conference and out of a room of about 30 i'd say there was a glimmer of recognition for "the fediverse" and "mastodon" from about two people and noone said they were on it.
saying this as an expression of how little known this place is even inside cultures that are 100% politically aligned
the nurse told me to measure my blood pressure every morning, keep doing the uh eating right and exercising thing* until i get a consistent 140/90 or less. i have been doing so.
the tester is some cheap thing off amazon, doctors are fine with this one weird trick cos they use basically the same one
right arm i typically score ~150/90, left arm i'm getting ~135/85
i am doubting i have notably higher blood pressure in my right arm than my left
i'm beginning to think in practical terms this number is +/-10mmHg

Chez moi Voxy, même chargé sans erreur par Fabric, ne fait absolument rien (le monde disparaît au delà des chunks de visibilité, alors qu'avec le mod "Distant Horizons" ça marche.)

@david_chisnall the accreted layers of path-dependent complexity, as opposed to, say, an Apple II, also make them somewhat unapproachable for youngsters. They have also been trending towards being closed consumer appliances with few to no provisions for programming.

Today's recreational computer touching will include setting up a NetBSD CI machine for #iocaine.
Since there's no forgejo runner in pkgsrc as far as I can tell, nor any other CI runner that could report to Forgejo, I'll spin up a VM, and use actions/bsd1 to SSH in and run commands.

I will, of course, have to name the NetBSD VM, and I recently started to name things after plants, using their latin name.
For many reasons, I'm gonna name the VM after some kind of moss. I just need to find the proper latin name.
