Rest in power, Alice Wong.

We were Twitter mutuals for a while and we exchanged a bunch of dms about Chinese food and ice cream. She said she could not eat most foods due to her disability but she enjoyed talking about and reading about them. She was also probably responsible for radicalizing me about disability politics. She very kindly sent me a copy of her book. Alice will be missed by everyone who has ever known her, read her, interacted with her.

One of the big story questions that The Last Samurai asks is:

When you face a high stakes rigged game, do you:
A) Quit and run (leaving others behind)?
B) Fight against the odds to save yourself within the terms of the game and to hell with collateral damage?
C) Ignore the rules and redefine the game to fight back?

It is a historical drama that is uncannily timely and relevant without being on the nose -- as the best stories often are.

The Last Samurai also asks: Who are you fundamentally and what do you have to do to be able to live with yourself?

I appreciate deeply how it is exploring this theme.

Last time I regularly created computer instructions in Java™️ was 2010.
Then someone thought, “let’s shim JVM bytecode and strict typing in “prototypical” JavaScript” but only in the code, not the runtime browser (other part of JVM).
That’s a big lift for “missing the dopamine hit from coding in Java”.
