I worked for 6 years for a company. One morning, they announced the company had been bought out, and 50% of the staff was immediately terminated in that same meeting. All remote employees including myself were immediately gone.

The executives' shares and options were worth millions. The options the regular employees had were underwater, absolutely worthless.

The news had a field day, announcing how a Vancouver company had been sold for millions. There were press releases and celebration. No one talked about -- or knew? -- that 25 employees had been terminated. It certainly wasn't in the press release

We fucked over 50% of our employees to get here, but hey, we made millions!

Six years of extreme hard work at a startup, and I had a t-shirt and a mug to show.

Totally agree: if AI substitutes for junior work that humans would have done as part of their learning/apprenticeship/whatever, then where does the next generation of senior workers (who have the judgment and expertise to oversee AI) even COME from? Do we get a whole generation who lack certain skills?

Even if AI is cost effective in this regard, it may create a long-term problem.

But then again, maybe the new skills are around guiding AI and fixing things and cycling them back through the AI.

I am not exactly one of those saying “I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords.” I think certain things are coming, and I want to understand the implications, good and bad.

@stephenrobles I think you'll get a kick out of this one. I had the manual on screen for a ViewSonic display and I asked #SiriAI to research that document for help getting Power Delivery to work. The answer was partially from the PDF, but it said “…some user tests have indicated it may not always supply power as expected to certain laptops like the MacBook Air.” The sources? Bear, where I was writing my review, and Mail.app, where I'd written to ViewSonic about the problem!

@payown An app which should be better optimized for VoiceOver screen reader on iOS? The first I have in mind is @obscuravpn it claims to be an open source VPN system I'm trying it currently. But although you can do almost everything in there, the interface could be much better.
Then, another area, the chess.com app to learn and play chess. You can use chessboard, but the suggestions and explanations read aloud, just say "look at this piece", they're sighted based only.
And, well, many other apps/services but now it's 2 in the night I haven't enough connected thoughts.

Living in the era of the AI omni-DDOS is weirdly similar to living in the era of dialup internet. Sites just don't load sometimes. Any cross-site image embedding (what we would come to call "CDNs" in the 00s) it's just a crapshoot whether it loads or takes 30 seconds to load or what, you get used to spotting empty spaces where an image is supposed to be but it didn't load. Search gives nonsense results about 30% of the time. There are no centralized repositories of open source code
