@tante I’m constantly thinking about that quote from Count Zero these days, it’s so chilling. Not knowing your address kind of reminds me of that thing where kings and queens don’t carry money because it’s “vulgar” and they have people to do all that stuff for them.

Also thinking about how all the things we would fear of a true artificial intelligence are already true of these billionaires. We are “lesser beings” who are just resources to them to be disposed of at will.

@tante All those “skills that don’t matter” actually DO matter very much and all the tech bros know it. They want to be the ones who have that knowledge in their machines and control it, dispensing it out for a fee. And they want to make people dependent on getting the information from the machine so we can’t turn it off.

Children often behave like this. They do things on the boundary of acceptable behaviour to learn where those boundaries are. It’s almost never a conscious ‘what can I get away with’ thing, it’s just a thing they do to understand what is permitted.

The morbidly wealthy regress to this, I suspect, because they either never had boundaries enforced (hereditary wealth) or suddenly have them removed. Most people have boundaries enforced by a bunch of different things. Laws, social constraints, economic constraints, and so on. When you become richer, some of the economic constraints go away. But so do some of the social ones: people around you are less likely to call you out for being rude if they depend on you for income. Eventually, so do the legal ones.

I suspect that this also triggers some paradox-of-choice-like anxiety. As constraints are removed, it’s very easy to become overwhelmed by possibilities. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if some of this is driven by a subconscious desire to find some boundaries and have them enforced so that they can, like the rest of us, reason about the space of possible actions more reliably.

@tante Definitely a test to see how far they can go (and Trump is doing it on purpose). But the prestige media also loves "bold", asinine statements like this because it gives them a "narrative" that they can sell. They might understand that it's bs, but it's great for continued click-bait.
