The free software movement did some good! I don't want to dismiss it. I am deeply grateful for the existence of the free software movement, and computers would be worse and less safe without it.
But it was insufficient.

An ability to think large-scale, and in patterns.
As well as noticing the small details of something we become really interested in. The data.
I call this, “zooming in” and “zooming out.”
(In fact, I don't seem to have the medium range lens in my kit!)

@KatyElphinstone honestly the task of switching a lens on an SLR camera seems a good metaphor for monotropism.
whether or not a question is appropriate when viewed through a different lens is a bad answer when we're looking through this lens, right?
"switching lenses takes time, so can you just address what I'm looking at now, please?"
@lauren I never used TENEX but worked with someone who had ... I was assign the task of designing a dial-up tty app for 2-dimensional layout of real estate newspaper ads ... I used the TENEX design principles and deployed the app with 1-page of documentation, most of which was taken up with how to set the DIP switches on the tty, dial in, login in and type "?" - and gave the phone number for our help desk. We deployed to several hundred offices (the app was used by the receptionists) and didn't receive a single help desk call.
@mattblaze apo-lanthar, perhaps, but nokton definitely has some of that leica character 😅
@exchgr Right, sorry. I got the nomenclature backwards there.
Both cases, I had to told Claude to fuck off and revert all its stupid changes (yes, exactly like that).
So far, my experience with AIs is: I'm writing readable READMEs explaining what each crate does, its constrains and such.
The only thing AI is helping me so far is forcing me to write proper documentation.

Sir Tim is one of those people I only have the deepest respect for.
“Ruby is my favorite programming language. It’s a great language and nothing really comes close to it in terms of expressiveness. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s mine.
”I love Ruby and Rails, and I even think Rails makes some great technical decisions that have still held up. But every time I read a word DHH says these days, my stomach turns.
“What are you supposed to do when your favorite programming language has a fascism problem?”
This Is For Everyone is now available in paperback.
You might recognise the face on the cover...a younger me at MIT in 1998 when 150 million people used the web. Today it's roughly 6 billion.

https://github.com/rust-random/rand/releases look at how fucked the rust random crate is. the releases are jumping back and forth in time and in the version string and they were all pushed out in the period since april => august, which (for those of you who don't have a traumatic experience searing it into your skull) is when the US declared war on iran
Canada’s prime minister announced the largest clean energy investment in North American history.
It’s a package of hydropower, onshore wind and transmission projects aimed at meeting electricity needs while also exporting power to Massachusetts and New York

@exchgr Oh, but the Noktons are merely "too clinical". Not like the Leica APOs. Not at all.

One time, trying to figure out a compiler segfault in a pipeline, it did suggest two changes to reduce the memory usage, none of them worked, and then decided it needed to change two different repositories, which I told it not to do 'cause those were used by other compilers, and then decided to change the compiler in question, which I, again, told it not to do.
