it is actually really strange that AES only does a block at a time like that. just a very basic issue with the approach. stream ciphers aren't better. but i'm apparently the only person who has ever treated parsing like a real research problem so i happened upon an encryption scheme too

maybe this is very 'grew up in and always lived in bike culture of the PNW of me' but i see people's bikes as being something like their familiars, where the state of what someone is riding is like one of the things you check up on with old friends or ask about when visiting - how the bike they were riding when you knew each other is holding up, or if they're on something new. their fundamental companion to space and interacting with the city. i know some people feel the same about cars but i just sort of don't, unless they have done something special to it a car is a car

Australian retrocomputing(ish) nerds, I've been helping my dad clean out some stuff and have stumbled into a trove of 90s and 2000s PC software...
I don't know all of what is here, but we have some boxed software including Windows 98 & ME, and a stack of PC magazine cover CDs from the 90s and early 2000s. Also about a billion versions of AutoCAD (my dad is a retired architect.)
Does anyone collect or archive any of this stuff? Will send to good homes within Australia for cost of postage.

#Peru: "Américo Pascuala Tomisha, a 57-year-old Ashaninka Indigenous leader and former head of the Onconashari Indigenous community, was shot dead Sunday while patrolling his community’s territory in Amazonian Ucayali region, according to the regional Indigenous organization ORAU.
ORAU said Pascuala encountered outsiders allegedly extracting oil from copaiba trees inside the community’s territory and was shot after a confrontation. The organization said he had previously reported incursions by settlers and other outsiders and called on authorities Monday to investigate his killing and strengthen protection for Indigenous leaders.
Pascuala’s killing came weeks after Asháninka communities along the Peru-Brazil border raised alarms about armed incursions into Indigenous territories.
In July, Indigenous leaders in neighboring Brazil sought government protection after five men carrying machine guns entered their territory, threatened families and searched for community leaders.
Brazil and Peru subsequently agreed to increase cooperation to protect Indigenous territories along their shared Amazonian border."

Following the murder of Asháninka leader Américo Pascual Tumisha, authorities have not reached the area of Onconashari due to a lack of funding and logistical support.
Onconashari is surrounded by drug trafficking and illegal logging in an area bordering the state of Acre in Brazil.
*The Breu police station reports that it lacks the fuel and logistical resources to reach the community; in fact, the option of having community members transport the body themselves is being considered, according to the NGO AFRONTA—which has a lawyer in Breu—as reported to Convoca.pe.

@david_chisnall I keep forgetting you worked on Étoilé. Do you think it will be ever resurrected?
I hope so, the ideas of not the code. One of the things I concluded was that the things we wanted to do in terms of composable small components and end-user programming really need finer-grained sharing and sandboxing than conventional hardware can do. This is why I worked on CHERI, because something like that is necessary for building systems where everything is easily programmable, documents carry code that can talk to a bunch of native languages, and the end result isn’t a system full of malware.
CHERIoT is a small-scale testbed for the kind of system that will enable something like Étoilé.
