I wrote on why we should be skeptical that "how can we scale-up X?" (be that our open knowledge #commons or "how can we get a European Google", …) is a reasonable framing.
As biologist JBS Haldane (and many planners inspired by him) point out, 'being the right size' does not just apply to animals, but also human organizations. You can't just 'scale' it without dramatically altering its shape and dynamics.

@amber As usual. A sighted person claiming to be advocate but then just considers their own point of view. You know what it means, searching for images? For you, just point - check - click. For us, ask a sighted to search for something, then maybe stay HOURS until the one sighted -or group of sighted- describe every image they find. Because most of royalty free image sites aren't easy to navigate with screen readers. And, yes, even assuming they are accessible, AI _should_ do the job of describing the image. You like it or not, AI is an aid. And every time I say this, I have to deal with fuckers trying to make me feel guilty, accusing me of deliberately ruining communities and environment.
The damages are real. This is nothing to discuss about, but don't take me. Rather go to accuse Musk, Altman, Amodei, and all those billionaires who are intentionally creating destruction. Blind users are a minority of minorities, compared to all those assholes who place AI even into the toothbrush, in a while. Abusers are others, not me!

I get that there are people for whom their primary motivation is stopping X. That's fine; somebody has to do that job. For me, my number one goal is growing the Fediverse and retaining people on the Fediverse.

@internetarchiveeurope This really makes you think: for an institution as crucial to digital preservation as the Internet Archive to rely on third-party instances for its Fediverse presence is a bit of a paradox.
You don't need to hunt for another general-purpose community like mastodon.nl, just spin up a single-user GoToSocial instance. It's lightweight, written in Go, consumes minimal resources, and gives you complete control over your ActivityPub keys without depending on anyone else's goodwill or risking another shutdown.
snac is also a great option (and littlefedy when released, though I haven't tried it yet so I can't vouch for it directly).

Could then direct the resources youd put into running your own instance into keeping things functioning well.
social.coop has been pretty successful. Has depended on a number of members being happy to give their time and skills to keep things running and moderated, but the "mission" has, over the years, attracted a steady flow of people willing to step up and theyve held things together nicely

I am reading “Crocosmia,” a gift left for me by editor Nick when he crashed at our place while we were out of town:
