Photo's from yesterday's OlieBollenTocht. It's an annual bicycle tour for velomobiles, held at the end of December when oliebollen are available. These are a kind of donut traditionally served for New Year's Eve in the Netherlands. For the first time ever, the tour was in Groningen. This meant that the start was less than 50 km from my home, so I went along this year (previously I've taken part in Zwolle and Utrecht but often it's too far from home so I don't take part).

Riding through a pretty village in Groningen. We're about to go over a small bridge. It took quite a while for all the velomobiles to get through each place.

One of many photos that I took of cycling through the countryside, with a huge queue of velomobiles disappearing into the mist before me. It was quite similar if I looked backward.

I stopped at this bridge into Groningen and took a couple of photos of people coming towards me. There's a railway line alongside the cycling bridge. I actually went over this bridge three times. Once on the way to the event, once on the way back and this time.

The bike ride to Groningen today was a bit on the "fresh" side. It was around 3-4 C and it was quite foggy. This actually made for very pleasant cycling as I was dressed for the weather.
I'm lucky that I live in a country where pretty much everyone can afford proper clothes, has a warm home, and has enough to eat. These are things that we should always be thankful for.

After 18 km or so, my bike took a rest next to the cycle-path while I ate some of my lunch. The fog today was a bit of a problem for cycling because my glasses kept misting up and I had to wipe them regularly to see where I was going. Unfortunately, my recumbent bike doesn't have a stand so I have to lay it down if there isn't a convenient object to lean it against. The frame is very high in the middle and I've never found a stand anything like long enough to support it.

On the way back it was even foggier. There's an "electricity pylon" on the other side of the canal here, just a few metres away, which was almost invisible. It's not actually a pylon, btw, but an artwork which commemorates both the founding of Groningen and the energy produced in this area of the country.

I went to Groningen today to protest for Gaza. There's a demo every other week between 13:00 and 14:00 in Groningen. These are quiet demos. We hold up signs and a few people hand out information to anyone who is interested.

Many olive trees which Palestinians rely on to make a living have been destroyed by the Israeli occupation so today they were handing out information about Stichting Plant een Olijfboom, who ask people to make a donation which is equivalent in value to planting an olive tree. You can donate a similar amount to what it costs to buy a Christmas tree.

Groningen was full of Christmas shoppers, and there were bands on the streets playing Christmas music. The whole story revolves around locations in Palestine: Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth etc. That people listen to these stories, while they ignore what's going on on the ground right now in those locations, is something that I find very strange.

Over the weekend I tried off-road capability of my "new" #recumbent bike.

I have to say that wet stones aren't the best surface for any bike so it failed on that but some light terrain (gravel, forest, dirt roads) is ok.

Btw I love the interactions with people that see something like this for the first time and they usually ask me to try it. I still have to figure out what's the best way to teach them how to ride it. Some people get it quite quickly, others fall from the bike and don't want to get on it again. But most of them say that it's super comfy, at least some appreciation for recumbents even if they can't ride it.

(The few followers that can recognise the road I took it on knew how nasty and difficult it is to ride a bike there)
