Anyone have luck using apache on an M2 mac? I installed via homebrew and am having zero luck getting it to work.
pantheraspeech 0.95.0 — Lion, and the speech data manager. It's all here. V1.00 will be a feature-complete release with Snow-leopard driver support included, too.
Tools → Mac OS X speech data. Point it at an install disc image you own and it does the rest.
• Recognises Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard and Lion from Apple's own version file — not from the file name
• Extracts to the right folder, with a progress bar that says where it is
• No Python, no 7-Zip, no unpacking software, and nothing is downloaded
• Asks before writing over speech data you already have
It also refuses, and says why:
• the Tiger build whose engine loads and then crashes — found by hashing the engine off the disc in a few seconds, before anything is written. The version number does not predict this one; the disc that works reports an older version than the disc that does not.
• 10.8 and later — Apple dropped the 32-bit build of MacinTalk after 10.7, so there is no code on those discs this can run
• anything that is not a Mac OS X installer at all
Snow Leopard is recognised and its engine is on the disc, but there is no Snow Leopard synthesizer yet, so the tool says so rather than filling a folder nothing reads.

@Derek Ah yes, that awesome tool you demonstrated on Sonic Synergy.
@alexchapman Yes, I hope you find it useful.

why are evil people so wealthy?
@caitp They are wealthy because evil
@ai6yr Unfortunately I was just a bit early to be able to use the computers for final printouts to turn in. While I had access to the "TN" print chain on the IBM 360/91 at UCLA, and it produced very nice upper/lowercase printouts on 8 1/2 x 11 paper when finished, you needed to pull off feed holes on the sides, which always left edges unsuitable for turning in. Missed it by that much! At the UCLA ARPANET lab (ARPANET/Internet site #1), we had one of the full-size phototypesetters that could be driven by TROFF, but it just was expensive and time-consuming to use.
@lauren @ai6yr
I printed some of my homework in 1978-1980 on a Teletype Model 33 ASR. Some teachers liked it (compared to handwriting), some thought I was cheating, "having a computer do my homework." Had to explain that it was just an "expensive typewriter."
From 1980, I used dot matrix printers instead. Somewhat different vibe. Still got mixed reactions from teachers in high school and first two years of college.
Started using DEC LN01 laser printer in 1984. No complaints from teachers.

Can't help thinking about the possibility of creating a non-profit that provides a proper web presence to community groups and small non-profits.
We'd offer a website with social functionality (events, signups, etc..), email newsletter sending, etc.. This wouldn't be a lot of custom work. Just reuse and redeploy the same tech over and dover again using different themes and assets.
People would fund this non-profit because they don't want FB to continue its stranglehold on society, which happens in part because orgs use FB Pages instead of regular web solutions because it's easier.
@teleclimber I think this is an excellent idea. Maybe a service structured like WordPress.org? e.g. a virtual host that lets you sign up and create an account, even have your own domain if you want. Provide a basic service for free but a small monthly fee for some reasonable extra service to help pay for the service.
If anyone is unfamiliar with Louis Wain, he perfected cat paintings in the late 1800s.
@lowqualityfacts TIL! 👍
say what you will about the myriad valid concerns with current LLMs but I personally will never get over the fact that Aaron Swartz was prosecuted to his literal death for downloading JSTOR and then a decade later, they downloaded & ingested the entire world and our IP laws just went ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
