Today in Labor History August 20, 1909: The Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) was engaged in a free-speech fight in Fresno, California, over the right to organize workers from street corners. Native American, Frank Little, led the fight, and the drive to organize local agricultural workers, including African Americans and immigrants from China and Latin America. Little, was lynched in 1917, during a labor struggle in Montana. During the Fresno Free Speech fight, hundreds of Wobblies hopped freights into Fresno to engage in civil disobedience, speaking on street corners to challenge the gag order against them, and filling the jails to capacity. They strategically chose not to hire attorneys and waste limited union resources. Instead, they defended themselves against high-paid corporate lawyers, with juries that were comprised almost entirely of the city’s business elite. Eventually, the city decided it couldn’t afford to continue housing and feeding its class war prisoners and chose, instead, to allow Pinkertons and vigilantes to brutally attack the activists on the streets.

Just got my examiner’s report for my dissertation and I got ripped to shreds pretty viciously. I still passed but reading the comments was awful. I spent months writing through nights and weekends, with a full time teaching job and raising kids. I know what I wrote isn’t perfect but I don’t understand why this ‘feedback’ couldn’t be delivered with more kindness. Needless to say, I am thoroughly disheartened and I’m now doubting everything I’ve ever done.
“In the days ahead, you’ll hear some people argue that Canada has no choice. We cannot afford to lose U.S. market access.
The data says otherwise. Merchandise exports to the United States fell by roughly $30 billion in 2025 — and were almost entirely offset by a $29 billion increase everywhere else. Global Affairs Canada’s own accounting puts non-U.S. markets at 32.8 per cent of Canadian exports, the highest share in four decades. Canada is negotiating from a considerably stronger position than its posture suggests.”
From the Canadian Shield Institute’s ‘What "Digital Trade Alignment" Would Cost’ https://canadianshieldinstitute.ca/updates/what-digital-trade-alignment-would-cost
Consider a strongly-typed programming language like Rust, Haskell, Lean, whatever: like human language, almost every well-typed transformation of the code corresponds to some meaningful change. In the same way that programmers can 'bounce off' the barriers of a type system to avoid bugs, a person using human language can 'bounce off' conceptual barriers that would otherwise lead to them producing unintelligible nonsense, simply by following the grammatical rules of the language.
However: the map is not the territory. For every well-typed transformation, there are innumerable invalid transformations that would correspond to meaningless rubbish in less expressive languages. Effectively, the language is turning the problem of *domain reasoning* into one of *pattern-matching* and *symbol manipulation* by constraining the set of possible programs to a small latent space within that covers a particularly high concentration of meaningful programs.
@jsbarretto that's primarily what turned my to FP and even code

minulle tarjottiin tietokirjan suomennostyötä espanjasta. kieltäydyn tietenkin, koska olen nykyään muissa töissä.
onko täällä sattumalta joku espanjan suomentaja, joka olisi työtä vailla ja jota voisin vinkata kustantajalle?
Calling on fediverse moderators: if you see a post that kind of, sort of borders on racism, but you're not really too sure: yep, you're definitely dealing with a racist.

None of the redesigns and user experience tweaks will matter if we can't make this place welcoming to everyone.

like the decision problem formulation of complexity actively removes information from the optimization formulation which is obnoxious to everyone it gets taught to. what if that's because optimality depends upon the model of computation and the entire mode of hierarchical classification of problem definitions is only true for the particular set of assumptions created to codify the turing machine?
like parsing can definitely be undecidable to solve in my formulation but the answer (if known) can be verified to conform to the grammar specification. and encryption seeks to achieve "effectively random" output—could this too be made undecidable? could something be known but effectively unguessable?
You're not witches, stop it already.

I've been keeping a running list of fediverse events going on for a while:
https://hackers.pub/@wakest/2026/upcoming-fediverse-events
I started the list on @hackerspub (1st screenshot) and it works pretty great, except that Mastodon (4th screenshot) doesn't display `articles` so it shows up here as just the title with a link and a OG preview which is really not great
It's pinned on https://activitypub.space > Technical Discussions
