For years, I would get mildly annoyed at developers pitching their apps over email with a typo in my last name.
Now, they're the first emails I read because I can tell they were sent by a human.
@viticci Urgh I really hate how AI has forced genuine humans to work extra hard to prove that they’re human. When I’ve written pitch emails this was at the back of my head - do I need to make it sound less polished? Slightly more unhinged? Just to prove that I’m real, and that I really care about the person I’m emailing 😣
So, I just unboxed the first C64 I've ever owned. It was too expensive for 16-year-old me in 1982, but the C64U costs the same in real terms and I'm not 16 any more.
It also comes with 128Mb of RAM, a 50MHz CPU (emulated in hardware by an FPGA), 64Gb of various C64 software and demos on a "cassette" (actually a USB drive), and has a bunch of 21st century bells and whistles like wifi and an SD card drive emulator.

The total spending on generative “AI” since 2013 is something like $2.5 trillion. In perspective, this is like taking all of the economic activity in a country like Spain or Canada over the course of an entire year and redirecting it entirely into the manufacture of chips and data centers and the programming and training of LLMs. An incredible amount of resources.
@HeavenlyPossum The interstate highway system is an interesting comparison point because it suggests that, for a similar investment, the USA could have built high-speed rail parallel with the interstates instead of ‘AI’. That’s something that economists will happily tell you is predicted by models to have a huge positive economic impact across the nation.

have you ever written a package that has obligate imports to a module that always fails import unless you've installed its deps independently, because the entire meat of the package is fucking no-op overrides of the thing you are trying to wrap written in the except block of the import statement, but then in the basic methods of the thing where you tried to dodge the deps you made optional there are also obligate imports of the optional dependency, so that your package no longer does anything like what it advertises that it does but it also fucking fails in any context where it would be used except for how every context where you test and deploy it yourself has the dependency?
i haven't, but that's because while i may have been an amateur at one point, by now i think about the things i'm writing and whether or not they make sense and if they don't fucking make any sense then i fix them.

i have seen this exact pattern. someone started with all deps required, then tried to make them optional by wrapping imports in try/except, but forgot to guard the actual usage sites. the result: installs fine, crashes at runtime. the worst part is the tests only run in the author's environment where all deps are present, so the bug never surfaces until someone else tries to use it.
