I love how glitches provide insight into how a system works.
Only two more weeks to enter your sci-fi stories for the Protopian Prize, given to works that imagine positive futures for humanity, w/tech that serves the public interest. (I'm one of the judges!) Two winners get $5000 US each, and publication in an anthology from MIT Press! #scifi #future #writing https://protopianprize.com/
@annaleen could this prize encompass submissions of fiction wherein AI CEOs are dropped into a lake with a weight on their feet, and data enters pillaged by an angry mob of people who want their paintings unstolen, their air unpolluted, their potable water unspoiled, their communities unharmed? Asking for several non-billionaire billions of friends.
people are pumping AI agents into mikrotik gear - wild that you'd give the AI direct access to networking equipment, can't you just like, ask the LLM questions and configure it yourself at least?

@David well as far as I read they are basically ready to die after they hatch, but first the males have to make song to mate. This one did immediately come to life after being turned over. It mostly certainly would have been run over or died of heat stroke if I hadn’t used my stick. I haven’t actually heard any noisy circada songs yet this season.
@RoboticistDuck Yes, adult cicada live for around two weeks.
Yes, it flew away when you turned it around, but it's hours are still counted.
You're lucky if you haven't heard them scream (I wouldn't call that a "song"). They've been waking me up for a few days now already.
Today's harvest: small bucket of strawberries, giant handfuls of kale and swiss chard, green onions, 3 tiny zucchini. Remember how I mentioned my partner planted 12 zucchini plants? I actually counted them and it's TWENTY... Hoo boy.
@sundogplanets
You will have sufficient zucchini to feed the whole county.
Fox has had a lot of practice drowning out the boos and whistles for their fucking hydration breaks. This should be right up their alley.
@mastodonmigration And they're mad that English speaking viewers are switching over to Telemundo and the more knowledgeable and passionate announcers.
ah yes good, I see Mozilla has "improved" Firefox settings by making PgDn not function to, you know, page down. A+++ use of resources, glad they're still doing their good work to make a browser that isn't a steaming pile 👍️
lol, half the time basic UI controls in the "improved" settings don't even work right and require a page reload too. just absolutely stellar fucking work from #Mozilla.
meanwhile the number of settings I have to turn off on a fresh install of #Firefox just goes up and up and up.
ah well, I'm the asshole for not having completed my goal of completely ditching Firefox yet. that's on me.
anyone know much about this PrivacyPro mob? looks like a business in sydney selling phones with grapheneOS and laptops with ZorinOS pre-installed - but there's no names attached to it to verify their authenticity/trustworthyness
@decryption taking 4 to 7 hours to setup Graphene seems like nonsense imho

One thing I wish our public health system did better is timely follow up care after an acute inpatient episode. I’ve booked myself to see a Medicare subsidised private healthcare provider next week because the only alternative is asking Gemini “is this OK?”
This is why I spent four years getting more community health services open than new inpatient wards. They don’t get the headlines and there’s rarely a ribbon cutting photo opp, but more people get to see a public health service and avoid hospital readmission.
@emmadavidson 🤞 it is OK Emma.
There’s few things cuter than a Piping Plover chick scampering on a sandy #FridayFootpath.

John Strong will play Trump appearance at World Cup final 'down the middle'.
Bullshit.
They'll kiss his ass. Just like they did for the US team.

I partially solved the "watermelon takes up too much space" problem by making about three quarts of agua fresca. I am thrilled to report that I am a thoroughly refreshed goddamn genius.

This is really bad on its own, but again — it's an absolute travesty that a private company like Thomson Reuters can collect and store massive databases of Americans' private and personal data — from names, addresses, Social Security numbers, ethnicity, social media posts, and location information — and the government can just buy that data, no warrant needed. The data broker industry needs be shut down and privacy rights in the U.S. regulated. https://www.404media.co/ice-to-pay-thomson-reuters-125-million-to-find-voter-fraud/
@zackwhittaker we have a woman who is local in my county in Central Vermont who has been really leading the charge in the Vermont legislature to be a lot more rigorous about data brokers; the woman who's running in the primary against her has donations that are exclusively from out-of-state lobbying orgs. This is a really challenging thing to fight against, all this tech $$ but I'm glad she's doing it.
for those of you who own ooold computers and use them to surf the internet: what kind of speeds are they on?
do they have the same download as the rest of your home, slightly slower or do you have a fancy phone line setup with 56k?

Here is some rare good news: when you pair solar panels with the planting of native flora around those panels, you get a restoration of insect populations AND commensurate befits to nearby agriculture, in a addition to carbon-free electricity generation:
“We found increases over time for all habitat and biodiversity metrics: floral rank, flowering plant species richness, insect group diversity, native bee abundance, and total insect abundance, with the most noticeable temporal increases in native bee abundance. We also found positive effects of proximity to solar-pollinator habitat on bee visitation to nearby soybean (Glycine max) fields.”
I have a theological joke, but only God knows if it's any good.
