@David well as far as I read they are basically ready to die after they hatch, but first the males have to make song to mate. This one did immediately come to life after being turned over. It mostly certainly would have been run over or died of heat stroke if I hadn’t used my stick. I haven’t actually heard any noisy circada songs yet this season.

Yes, it flew away when you turned it around, but it's hours are still counted.
You're lucky if you haven't heard them scream (I wouldn't call that a "song"). They've been waking me up for a few days now already.
