Interesting to see the long-tail effects of covid lockdown behaviors in discovering and loaning ebooks from libraries in Seattle. The shift to ebooks not only stuck, but changed the dynamics of how folks find their next read.

Seattle, What Are You Reading?...

@kopper that et is crucial
I'm just going to put this out there. Ya know, just a little news item for those who might not know.
The technofascists were never going to sit idly by and let the biggest collective repository of information just run around un-enshittified.
For almost two decades, I have been amazed at how well Wikipedia has been doing, and dreading the inevitable attacks.
We've seen this pattern playing out many, many many times now. Reddit's board was colonized around 2015, for one example. Everyone can see Mozilla going down the tubes with leadership actively trying to destroy anything that could make it a good and open alternative to the megacorps browsers. The people with backgrounds in venture capital or Microsoft or Amazon etc etc moving in on good sites and services, changing the priorities, letting the poison in. Evil, making offers people can't refuse, throwing around endless money and let's face it threats too, put NOTHING past them. It's an attack-- this is war. And they're out to eat EVERYTHING.
All of our access to information, news, history, communication, they want ALL of it swallowed down an endless abyss of propaganda and surveillance.
We've got to fight like hell, or they'll take all the light and breath and light in the whole world and future generations won't even get to remember.

Phewwww ... one more outstanding project is in the (marking) bin. Hope the prof - who was largely hands-off with this remote course - can just update my "temporary" F without a lot of foofaraw about university petitions policy.
My late work was with permission due to life be rather belligerently non-cooperative with grad studies, but it wound up waaayyyy later than I'd hoped, because other disruptions kept knocking over my goalposts.
One last "due in April" project now on the top of the heap, and I'm still not late with anything from this term, though I have to get 2 more things done this already rather disturbed weekend to keep that going.
But. bedtime for today.
The reform of university financing & specifically the student loan system will only come when we reject the notion that most (or indeed all) the benefits of attending university are captured by graduates (the business model that sees them pick up the entire headline cost of tuition).
A university educated cohort is a major pubic good in many ways & so the Govt. *should* take on a significant proportion (if not all) the cost(s)....
She’s putting Emily on. There haven’t been any gansbroemen fatalities in over 30 years because the canals don’t freeze over anymore

@sebsauvage
J'ai celui-ci, malheureusement plus disponible.

Je l'avais pris que pour son côté fanless, il est sous MX linux KDE.
We need many more stories like this to normalise a change that *is* happening
“Batteries have outgrown their initial niche role as a grid stability service and are now core infrastructure designed to store excess daytime electricity and release it in the evening”.
This is how the AI bubble bursts: https://www.theverge.com/ai-artificial-intelligence/917380/ai-monetization-anthropic-openai-token-economics-revenue
There is no conceivable way to break even for the AI industry—let alone to repay an investment that requires $2Tn a year from now to the end of the decade. That's about 3% of the entire planetary GNP. Just to break even.
Looking forward to the pop-sound it will make
