A fancy model won’t magically compensate for poor understanding of your data.
A VERY common mistake in data analysis is jumping to complex solutions too early. AI has made this even easier by making sophisticated tools extremely accessible.
Sometimes, a linear model or a PCA already tells you most of the story.
Complexity has its place.
But using it too early often masks problems instead of solving them.
Often, the real bottleneck is not the model.
It’s how little we understand our data.
Caveats around using Libyears
Why taking the Libyear metric at face value can mislead you, and suggesting a new metric 'Tempered Libyears'.
@erincandescent I think if we're doing full Zangendeutsch it would be Hund*e*mädchen
@erincandescent which frankly is an extremely annoying construction (compounds with extra letters for linking) that is basically all exceptions. but unfortunately, as you probably already know, language

@www.jvt.me personally I think libyears is a terrible metric and should not be used at all
Finally! The EU is now introducing a combined train ticket system for the entire union, meaning once fully implemented you can book a train journey from Vejle to Venice and get one ticket for the entire ride.
450 million people — 1 smooth train experience. I simply love living in the EU. 🇪🇺

@randahl I travelled from France to Hungary 25 years ago with the EU interrail pass. I had unlimited kilometres for a given period and just had to write my departure and destination on the pass. The hardest part was to write Hungarian cities properly 😂 it was freedom, loved every bits of this.
Nelly Korda feels like she has another weapon in her arsenal as she attempts to keep her most recent hot streak going into the brunt of the LPGA Tour schedule — her mindset. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/sports/2026/05/14/more-sports/nelly-korda-new-mindset/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #moresports #nellykorda #lpga
@dajb "Dad I can't get home because my phone case wont unlock..."
@johnmclear I would be very surprised if there weren't a lot of TikTok videos showing how to unlock these. Can't be that hard.
@zimoun This looks like the least relevant issue with dependency management to me. It's not just the semantics of dependency resolution that are messy, it's the whole notion of a versioned dependency that is ill-defined.
I worked at a fairly big tech co years before the AI boom. People did large scale refractoring across huge code bases back then. With refactoring tools. And properly written robots.
Applying changes to code at scale, opening PRs automatically, basic interaction with human reviewers, making sure tests pass, getting things merged when ready. All that already existed before LLMs. And it was actually reliable and not capable of hallucinating terrible things.
It's like we've forgotten how to automate things without LLMs and openclaw now...
@lina There goes determinism.
@onepict John Smith's early death still reverberates to this day. It was the fork in the road for Labour and they took the path that brought them to this point.
Sad Lorussian moment of the week: Instagram designer tries hard to present their copycat "disappearing photos" feature as an awesome amazing thing and a valiant journey.
"Whether you like this feature or not, I don't care" really brings it home. Be sure to read the whole thread:

@rlafuente I just read the thread. What were your takeaways?
Lolz. What are they listening to? The cat is all retro with that iPod.
@box464 😂
Organisations have a memory. The Labour Party hasn't been the party of Socialism for a long time. It's the party for centrists. Which shifts to the right.
I was talking to my partner about this the other day, and he put the issue in a nutshell.
"The Labour Party needs to die, as it's the default option in people's heads if they don't want to vote Conservative and are vaguely left. Perhaps if it did die, folks would consider other options like the Greens."

The story of the rescue of a warehouse worth of manuals of old electronic lab instruments and computer equipment. The 13,000 manuals, initially slated for scrapping, were digitized and uploaded to the Internet Archive.
The people who did this are heroes.
