Organisations have a memory. The Labour Party hasn't been the party of Socialism for a long time. It's the party for centrists. Which shifts to the right.
I was talking to my partner about this the other day, and he put the issue in a nutshell.
"The Labour Party needs to die, as it's the default option in people's heads if they don't want to vote Conservative and are vaguely left. Perhaps if it did die, folks would consider other options like the Greens."
@onepict Labour as the “catch and kill” organisation for left-leaning political ideas. 🤔
Now I’m wondering which parties in NL provide that function too…
@onepict John Smith's early death still reverberates to this day. It was the fork in the road for Labour and they took the path that brought them to this point.
@tanepiper Yeah I don't think folks realise just how much of a difference that made. People hoped the party would find it's way back.
But it's as much the perceived stability of the two party system in Westminster. It kept folks who might have crossed the floor from leaving. It's what keeps folks with family ties to Labour voting for it.
It's not the party for workers and therefore human rights that it was. The time has come to grieve, but certainly not to try to rescue it.
