Ep 174 "Pacific Rim" is now live! 🔊
Sophos got attacked by a nation state actor. How they handled it is controversial. Curious what you would have done.
@georgetakei in a hearse preferably or even better an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs
Semi-related: one of the things I worked on way back was a winter sports game, and among other things I did a fair amount of animation programming for that. Basic IK solver, some anim blend logic for the player controller, an animation state machine tool, poking around in animation compression/streaming and cut scenes, a bit of everything.
And my nemesis? Fucking cross-country skiing.
It’s a common error to think that England and the US speak the same language. They speak two related but decidedly different languages: spineless and bluster.
@aral Sheeit, as a Yankee named Illingworth, I feel so got.
collecting OKURI-NASI entries is my favorite part of the emacs build

@cy
> How did you organize without big corporations listening in?
Good question. Our information strategy assumed that any online stuff was being monitored by informants. Most of our tactics relied on weight of numbers rather than secrecy. Any tactics that required secrecy were discussed and carried out by small affinity groups, using in-person meetings.
Keep in mind that this was before most people had mobile devices. So in-person organising was still the norm for activists.

Also, in the late 1990s, most activist factions were only concerned about government surveillance. Only the most radical anticapitalists, hackers and independent mediatistas understood that corporations were even a threat. Not coincidental that Indymedia was forged in the overlap between these 3 camps.
Internet freedom has declined for 15 consecutive years.
Is it time to rethink how it’s funded?

@mattrobertson happens so often on aliexpress, i hate it and wish they'd crack down on this deceptive shit
@decryption @mattrobertson happens on ebay as well, they will put in a tiny piece of plastic or something at 0.30 and the actual item you want is on the same listing for $999
No thanks, not attending the UN open source week in New York in June. Maybe once there's another administration in charge.
@bagder I'm not sure what kind of administration you mean, but it will never change at the #UN, because it's already a full-fledged #ecosystem like a mycelium.
Even the intellectual level there is similar.

@milo unicodependent
@argentumcation ackshually it's shamp/GNU
Side note - it is very interesting how Milo is slowly morphing into Steve Bannon, like, physically.
What nazism will do to a mutherfucker's face I guess.
some speculative fiction I read in a hacker news
"Tier 1 networks legally not allowed to route packets that aren't digitally signed by a cryptographic ID linked to you"
possibly not that speculative :(
@decryption a fertile environment in which to build parallel, decentralised infrastructure, and steganographic VPNs.

@whatifbot pretty sure this is the popular explanation of chaos theory

I'm inspired to see many long-standing Fediverse supporters, moderators, admins, and code contributors volunteer their expertise for Discovery Week! I can't wait to learn from you all.
But we're missing some important voices: Non-technical users.
Which is why I have a favor to ask: Please share this post with someone you know who is a casual, non-technical user of Mastodon or any social platform. I want to make sure we're hearing from a wide range of perspectives!
I'm hosting @Mastodon's first ever Discovery Week in just a few days. It's a chance for the public to weigh in on the future of online communities.
We'll be discussing topics like user-controlled algorithms, trust & safety, creator tools, and more. Your input will help steer Mastodon towards a more inclusive and impactful roadmap. Non-technical folks strongly encouraged to attend, and there's an async option if you can't make the live sessions!
