#Urban #WildlifeCorridors Help Mitigate #Climate Effects
Kyle Chan February 26, 2025
Excerpt: " #GreenCorridors offer a promising start to mitigating these urban issues, allowing cities to naturally lower temperatures through evapotranspiration, a plant process that releases water vapor to cool the surrounding air. Increased vegetation will also allow more hazardous particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to be absorbed, reducing greenhouse gas concentration and improving air quality.
" #Columbia’s second-largest city, #Medellín, launched a green corridor initiative in 2016. Since then, environmental planners there added rows of vegetation along the most polluted avenues, maximizing the amount of CO2 intake from their $16.8 million investment. Maurício Correa, a researcher studying environmental engineering at a Colombian University, found that the 8,800 trees planted became effective 'green barriers' against particulate matter and reduced average city temperature by two degrees Celsius.
"Fighting #ClimateChange isn’t the only thing green corridors can do. Historically, #wildlife has rarely been welcomed into urban life, experiencing drastic changes in the #ecosystem. However, nature-based infrastructure can promote #biodiversity and provide animal species with a safe habitat. Green corridors are indeed multi-purpose and flexible. To maximize the limited space in busy cities, green corridors can function as recreational centers, city facilities and much more—all while mitigating climate change.
"Green corridors can be an effective solution for any city anywhere. In #NewYork, the #ManhattanWaterfrontGreenway consists of almost 32 miles of #BikePath lined with various plant species. Urban ' #NatureWays' in #Singapore mimic the natural #rainforests by incorporating trees with #canopies stretching across the roads."

The more I think about it, the more I see package manager registries as providing a large amount of governance support to their ecosystems: https://nesbitt.io/2025/12/22/package-registries-are-governance-as-a-service.html
@andrewnez Agreed!
We need to clearly distinguish the different types of governance you speak of, and this means we must clearly show the actors in play.
Project Governance and Ecosystem Governance are similar to publishing in academia:
Academic institutions (= "Projects") influence _what_ may be published.
Journals (= "Ecosystems") influence _how_ something is published.
Researchers (= "Contributors") do the actual work.
There's no #opensource #ecosystem without all three types of actors!

How GenAI is taking true fans activity – and creativity – to the next level
Walled Culture has written a number of times about the true fans approach – the idea that creators can be supported directly and effectively by the people who love their work. As Walled Culture the book explains (available as a free ebook), one of the earliest and best expositions of the concept came from Kevin Kelly, former Executive Editor at Wired magazine, in an essay he wrote originally […]

Blue whales fall silent due to starvation, seen as a warning of a collapsing #ocean #ecosystem.
🐋
Blue #whales are calling less than they used to... a strange and heartbreaking shift that scientists link to shrinking krill populations during marine #heatwaves. When these giants struggle to find enough food, they spend more time searching and far less time singing... a change that signals stress in both the animals and the ecosystem they depend on. 🐋

If this result holds up, it’s potentially big: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-025-02481-0
In short, it implies that #LightPollution is decreasing the efficiency with which #plants remove carbon from the atmosphere. It concludes that artificial light at night increases “ #ecosystem respiration” (plants, microbes, and animals releasing carbon dioxide through their activity and growth), but there is no corresponding increase in #photosynthesis.
The result is that plants exposed to ALAN emit more #carbon than they absorb from the #atmosphere. The authors write: “Our findings show that ALAN disrupts the fundamental energetic constraints on ecosystem metabolism, warranting the inclusion of light pollution in global change and carbon–climate feedback assessments.”
#BeeBricks become planning requirement for new buildings in Brighton
Amy Frearson | 24 January 2022
"A planning law introduced in the city of Brighton and Hove, England, calls for new buildings to include special bricks that provide nests for solitary bees.
"Brighton & Hove Council's policy stipulates that all new buildings above five metres should include bee bricks, as well as #BirdNesting boxes suitable for swifts.
"These bee bricks are the same size as regular bricks, but integrate a series of narrow openings like those where solitary bees are known to nest.
"The aim is to increase opportunities for #biodiversity. With solitary bees making up nearly 250 of the approximately 270 bee species in #Britain, they play an important role in the natural #ecosystem.
" 'Bee bricks are just one of quite a number of measures that really should be in place to address biodiversity concerns that have arisen through years of neglect of the natural environment,' said Robert Nemeth, the councillor behind the initiative.
" 'Increased planting, hedgehog holes, swift boxes and bird feeders are all examples of other cheap and simple ideas that, together, could lead to easy medium-term gains,' he told Dezeen."
